What makes this sound effect (cartoons)?

In Hanna-Barbera cartoons particularly, whenever they wanted to telegraph the idea that a dog was vicious and dangerous, they would show an example of the dog biting something (or someone). And the sound effect that accompanied the biting would be this really ominous-sounding CRUNCHY noise, like a robot with titanium jaws masticating a tree, or a boulder.

I’m feeling too lazy right now to track down a video with a demonstration of the effect, but I will if it turns out to be absolutely necessary. In the meantime, can anyone tell me what kind of device made that noise?

Thanks!

IIRC, it’s a guy biting into a piece of celery in an echo chamber. I had a friend who did radio voices and sound effects, and that’s what I remember him telling me.
