I was just listening to Tori Amos “me and a gun” and it inspired me to conjure up the question…what is the saddest song you know?
Keeping in mind that there are two types here…Theres songs that are sad to you because emotionally they trigger some sort of heartstring in your past…in which case I give it to Mariah Careys “one sweet day” and “Leaving on a jetplane”
The other types are songs that are just plain sad and always bring up tears, and for that answer it’s “next to last song” on Dancer in the Dark. The version with the cutoff point and everything…and even this song is only sad due to the circumstance it was in so lastly my vote will go to Placebo - Burger Queen - that song always makes me sad
I am a soggy mess of a girl when it comes to sad/touching/sentimental stuff in general, so a LOT of songs bring a tear to my eye, but that Elton song actually made me sob.
“Butterfly Kisses” by Bob Carlysle. It’s sappy and it ALWAYS causes me to shed a few tears because my real father was never around for those ‘special’ moments in a girl’s life…starring in the school play, choir concerts, birthdays, holidays…you name it.
Well, I hate to be such a sap, but “The Dance” by Garth Brooks makes me really sad. The song itself used to get me, but the video adds a whole new dimension because it shows a lot of people who died too young.
Honestly, I swear I don’t listen to much country music, but my other entry is also country. “Love, Me” was big after my grandmother died. The idea of one grandparent waiting for the other one up in heaven–or my grandma, waiting for me even though it may be 60 more years before I’m there to see her-- makes me snuffle.
I also find “Diary” by Bread to be a sad song.
Having confessed musical tastes like these, I am having no trouble imagining 100 dopers reaching for their pens to write down “Never roadtip in Cranky’s car” on their “lists of things to remember.”
I’ll go with you, Cranky. I’m not ashamed to admit I like country music. (The Dance and Love Me are both weep-inducers here, and did you ever hear Don’t Take The Girl or Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning or… or… <snif> … somebody pass me a tissue.)
Hey Cranky, it appears I’m right there with you when it comes to getting depressed to C&W music. “The Dance” makes me sad too, though not as much as the other song mentioned.
I wonder if there are more depressing Country songs than any other kind?
This far, and no And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda? Untold cubic meters of sadness compressed into seven minutes’ worth of music, and it never fails to bring my mood down whenever it comes up on my playlist.
Cat’s in the Cradle by Harry Chapin has always gotten to me because, when my father was alive, we never spent too much time together. Hunting and fishing were his most important things in his life.
