I found this crawling around my floor. It was about half an inch long (that’s a large shot glass it’s sitting in). Is is one of those solpugids? I didn’t know they live around here. It seems to have eight legs from what I can tell, along with a long pair or pedipalps or something similar. Excuse the quality, it wouldn’t sit still and I wasn’t about to hold it in my hand, even though I know they aren’t dangerous.
As a side note, what is the origin of the quote in my subject line?
No, it’s inside a shot glass, one of the large ones. Yeah, apparently Ikea sells those, too. I wanted to catch it, but didn’t want to use one of my good glasses, and I figure hard liquor would wash away the icky bug germs.
Nevada. I am in the Great Basin, and I know they’re desert creatures, I just hear about them in hot places like the Arabian desert. I am also thinking it could be Amblypygi.
Its clear by reading the OP Location they are from “City of Trembling Leaves”.
Been awhile since i have seen one of them. Had one in the lounge room along time ago behind painting, had its legs hanging out just like in the link you posted.
Ever since i heard that daddy long legs kill and eat other spiders I now leave them alone and don’t kill them. I don’t know if this is just an old wifes tale but I haven’t seen any other spiders since!
If I’m allowed to be snarky, that “Google” is pretty nifty.
Ah don’t worry they’ll freeze to death soon. The creepy wildlife is pretty minimal here compared to the Southeast, we don’t have to worry about Palmetto bugs or cicadas or anything. Although one time early in the morning I was staying at my dad’s house in CA, and screamed like a little girl when I found a potato bug crawling on my sock. It seems the less dangerous arthropods are the fearsome ones.
That looks pretty close, scr4. It was waving those front limbs around really fast in every direction.
Those little bastards have their own website! They even come in fuzzy varieties, so they can appeal to children before they devour their souls, perhaps?
