I was watching this very stodgy 1960s BBC history show the other day (and, incidentally, expecting a knight on horseback to emerge and kill the presenter at any moment [:)] ).
At timestamp 6:56 there is painting shown of what appears to be Jesus measuring a Mandlebrot set. Anyone know what this painting is and what its back story is ?
It’s apparently a miniature from what’s best described as a “picture Bible”, made in the early 13th Century. I’d imagine the artist is unknown. That’s probably supposed to be the chaos out of which the orderly universe was formed. It does have a striking resemblance to a fractal image.
BTW, is there a database of ‘classical’ paintings that one could enter in some keywords and then have the software generate potential matches?
For instance, type in ‘apple, pear, grape’ and one would get thumbnails of about 2000 still lifes.
Would be a handy thing for some of us with imperfect memory recall . . .
