What movie was this

I’m trying find a movie I saw once but can’t remember the title. Story line:

The main character was a guy who only had and enjoyed old things. I think he was writing an encyclopedia of old things. Phonographs and stuff. He has a crush on a woman who maybe didn’t like him romantically. They took a trip to see a guy who lived in the desert. He died. I think our hero lost his girl in the end.

I know it’s vague but it’s all I can remember and that might not be 100% correct.

Anyone?

Giving this my one allotted bump. I can’t believe I didn’t even get a few guesses!

Crossing fingers…

A few more details might help:

B&W or color?
Any known actors?
Where and when was the story set?
Roughly when was it made?
When and where did you see it? (If in a theater, we know it wasn’t a TV movie.)

Obselidia?

Based on the trailer for that movie, it has to be what the OP was asking about. Amazing job.

Damn, that’s nice work!

Blank Slate, had you seen the movie and recognized the description, or was that masterful googling? Either way, well done.

I just like searching for stuff sometimes. There were only five hits on imdb.com using the keywords “encyclopedia” and “friendship,” so that was an easy one.

Wow, great job. That’s it!!! I googled every combination of term I could think of and couldn’t get a hit. Bravo, Blank Slate, bravo. Thanks.

My pleasure. I’m wondering if you liked the film, though. I’m not familiar with the director or any of the cast, but that doesn’t mean anything.

I liked it but it wasn’t a great movie. It was quirky and different which I enjoy - not the typical Hollywood film. Then again I don’t remember too much about the particulars, just the mood and feel of it.
