What Movies Have You Seen Lately?

I saw Tuck Everlasting --quite unexpectedly. My friend and I were being spontaneous, she didn’t want to see Ghost Ship , and nothing else looked good at the time. It was a nice story, though it’s not what I normally would have chosen to see.

I had seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding a few weeks earlier–very little conflict, but cute, funny and entertaining. Everyone in the audience applauded at the end.

  • The Ring [sub]which was not scary[/sub] but pretty good.

Since I don’t see movies in the theaters that often, I usually wait for things to come out on DVD.

  • Frailty which I liked, although its similarities to a short novel I finished in 2000 bothered me somewhat, despite being absolutely sure my ideas weren’t “borrowed”.
  • Blade and Blade 2. I saw them both for the first time within a week or so of each other. The second one wasn’t nearly as good as the first.
  • Resident Evil. Wicked cool, as far as action-horror movies go.
  • ** Van Wilder**. Eh. I saw it because Ryan Reynolds is in it. It fulfilled the eye-candy requirements, but plot…what plot?

Punch-Drunk Love Another fan here.
Spirited Away just great stuff
Scratch See it even if you’re not a fan of hip-hop/turntablism. These guys are soooo talented
Monsoon Wedding I’m hungry for marigolds

Netfix can be your friend.
Last week I got a message recommending an independent film, and tried it, although I’d never heard of it.

Final - Denis Leary
Sensual, baffling and thoroughly entertaining. Waking up from a coma, Bill (Denis Leary) struggles with memories of his father’s death, hallucinations and episodes of rage. Hope Davis is the lonely psychologist assigned to assess his mental state. Their therapy sessions are unconventional – full of sexual energy and confrontation – but prove beneficial, as Bill slowly recovers … or does he?
It was great!

and I have to admit I enjoyed Death to Smoochy
:o

I have to respectfully disagree. I just saw it at an IMAX theater and I think it is entirely the wrong presentation. The movie was clearly not framed for IMAX, shot with IMAX cameras. They cropped the widescreen to fit it onto the IMAX, the compostioin simply was not correct. It simply does not compare to a true IMAX movie, nor was it as good as the standard widescreen presentation.

I do think that the movies story flowed much better with a lot of the clunky romance missing, but I also commented to my friend how they took that Jar Jar scene out and it might be confusing.

I just saw Femme Fatale last night. It was a gloriously sleazy romp through all of Brian De Palma’s cinematic fetishes. Sex, Violence, Hitchcock rip-offs, masterful camera work, twists, turns, double-crosses, triple-crosses and an ending guaranteed to piss some people off by doubling back on itself and veering off in a new direction. I’m a little embarassed that I found it so wildly entertaining.

I hereby forgive De Palma for Mission to Mars.

I would also like to add Autofocus to this list! It was a great movie, Greg Kinnear gave a fabulous performance as Bob Crane. Willem Defoe was great, as usual.

I also saw Punch Drunk Love last night and loved it. I saw Frailty when it came out in the theatres and thought it was great, I really enjoyed it.

I also saw Igby Goes Down and Tadpole, two interesting coming of age movies. Although Igby was by far the better movie, I really liked Bebe Neuwith and Sigourney Weaver in Tadpole.
