My 19-year-old son and I love to watch mutually enjoyable shows/movies and talk about them afterward. Luckily, our tastes are fairly similar. But with movies in particular, it’s hard after a few classic/cult hits to figure out what we’ll both enjoy, plus we are apart most of the year so we’re not always on the same page in terms of which episodes we’ve already seen. So Doper recs for shows that neither of us are familiar with very welcome.
We have both Netflix and Apple TV, so anything we can access through those methods is fine.
Here’s some info on our tastes, which run to dark comedies/SF/stereotypically Doper faves/crime shows. We have both seen, and like:
Harold and Maude
Dark Star
Airplane!
Princess Bride
Office Space
Criminal Minds
Police Squad
Angie Tribeca
Rick and Morty
South Park
Simpsons
Futurama
iZombie
BBT
I also love Wes Anderson films and Napoleon Dynamite, but for some reason these do not impress my spawn. Similarly, he is crazy about It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Preacher, whereas I am game to watch them, but don’t love them. He recommends Bojack Horseman, but has already seen lots, and I have never watched it, so we’re at very different viewing places for that.
So what else should we watch that would be new to both of us and enjoyable? I guess movies, or TV shows that have episodes that are stand-alone entertaining without needing to be clued in to the larger plot arc, are best.
Are you Elmore Leonard fans by any chance? The book Rum Punch is a favorite of mine, and the movie version Jackie Brown is a classic. It has Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert DeNiro, Bridget Fonda, Robert Forster, Michael Keaton, and Chris Tucker all in their prime.
There’s a lot of it , but do make sure to watch the alternative last episode (the original one is cr*p. :smack:)
Sadly this much better episode may only be available on DVD…
I don’t know if they’re available through Netflix or Apple TV, but Arrested Development and Flight of the Conchords are excellent TV comedies. So is Pushing Daisies.
I dunno how AppleTV works. Do they have anything for free or do you have to buy anything you want to watch?
You must watch Bob’s Burgers (no longer on Netflix but available on iTunes)
Hot Fuzz is on Netflix, but you’d like any of Simon Pegg’s movies and his series “Spaced”
Have you seen the original UK Office? It’s great. On Netflix.
Black Mirror is on Netflix. it’s crazy.
Miss Fischer’s Mysteries is a fantastic mystery series on Netflix
You and I seem to have similar tastes (not sure why your son doesn’t like Napoleon Dynamite. GOSH. But also I love Always Sunny.)
Just to answer your question - things aren’t free, but the prices tend to be pretty reasonable, and you can choose to buy a single episode (usually around $2) or a season (variable, naturally, but perhaps around $20). You can buy or rent movies, and if you rent you have 30 days to watch.
