What musical "guilty pleasures" do you have?

With the ease of buying music online allowing for the purchase of individual songs, what sort of “guilty pleasure” sort of songs do you have in your CD collection or your MP3 player now. You know, the songs you silently like- but won’t play if anyone else is around. And has the ability to purchase individual songs helped you get those songs you probably shouldn’t like, but do anyway?

For me it’s the 3 songs from the Go-Go’s that I purchased from ITunes, although I don’t necessarily trumpet the ABBA Gold album on my Ipod either. Curse the ease of click to download on ITunes- it will be my downfall. . .

So fess up already-

Like I said in a similar recent thread, I do not have guilty pleasures. In a related thread, several of my all-time favourite songs have been mentioned as candidates to be destroyed forever. So what?

A friend of mine made me a huge mix tape, as well as a couple of videos full of stuff from these Japanese bands, SMAP (their New Kids/n’Sync type boy band), Morning Mesume (a girl band that just gets bigger and bigger and is more and more ridiculous), and this girl band Puffy. Lots of big band type music that’s absolute fun to listen to, but completely ridiculous and stupid. If I could understand the lyrics, I’m sure I’d be ashamed to admit my knowledge of them, but as it is, I just think it’s great!

The music videos are another really amazing guilty pleasure.

I love comedy bands like The Arrogant Worms, and a well done acapella group like Davinci’s Notebook makes me smile every time. Along the same lines, I’m also a huge Moxy Fruvous fan.

SMAP. Five of the most untalented dickwads on the planet. They can’t sing, they can’t dance, and every week they have a comedy variety show which they finish by mutilating a classic pop song. And they are HUUUUUGE. Probably the most popular pop group over here. To their credit, they can be pretty funny in the sketches. Don’t even get me started on Morning Musume.

My guilty pleasure is Frente! 's Marvin the Album.

Also a Moxy Früvous fan here.

The most recent addition to my guilty pleasure playlist is the soundtrack to A Mighty Wind. My dad’s Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul & Mary albums were the background music of my childhood.

Much of the music I play at work gets me stares from my coworkers (yeah, I like operetta – get over it!), but I save the folk stuff for after hours.

My one would have to be Snoop Dogg. I am normally a folkie/world music type and I just cringe everyone time he calls a woman “bitch”. I also dislike about 80% of what goes on musically. But his voice is just sooooooo sexy. Swoon. Good girl likes bad boy type of thing, I guess.

I’m a huge Moxy Fruvous fan, and I really like Snoop Dogg (especially his old stuff) and Puffy AmiYumi (the Japanese girl group), but I don’t consider liking them anything to feel guilty about.

I’m much more embarrassed about liking Meat Loaf, Styx, and Blue Oyster Cult, but they all have some really rockin’ songs mixed in with the cheese.

I don’t care for the teenybopper stuff at all, but I dig Britney Spears’ latest single, “Toxic,” because of the twangy guitars and general spy movie soundtrack feel to it. I liked Shakira’s “Objection Tango” single for more of the same–a pop song in a minor key with the reverby guitars and ACCORDIONS!

And “Ice Ice Baby” always makes me smile, but mainly because I sang a Vegas lounge-style version of it at karaoke once, and that became infamous. I gave the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon theme the same Vegas lounge treatment at the San Diego Comic Convention one year, and drew quite a crowd. I can put up with almost any bad song if it is performed in a cheesy, over-the-top hipster lounge crooner style.
