He’s a Celebrity-American. Basically, he is famous for being famous.
He was also a budding contracted film star for MGM during the dying days of the studio system. Not really a big deal, except that he is a minor link to “Old Hollywood” and the way studios used to control, mold, and groom up-and-coming stars and cultivate an image for them. He can be slightly interesting in interviews when he talks about that particular time.
But, yeah, he pretty much is a professional celebrity/pitchman/occasional TV show now who specializes in portraying Hollywood phonies or parodying his own image. He’s also known for having been Shannon Doherty’s father-in-law for the blink of an eye and marrying a woman who was later married to Rod Stewart.
