I always liked the skits featuring the weird looking “Schmenge Bothers”.
Were they supposed to be Transylvanian? Or Polis? Or (vaguely) Bavarian?
The late John Candy enjoyed the role, I suspect.
Remember the Christmas ritual (sock exchange)? Hilarious:D
It was SCTV, not SNL, as I recall.
They were Leutonians.
Cabbage rolls and coffee!! Mmm Mmm good!
As seen here.
Thanks to Mrs. Yatschke!
Seriously, Elmer J. Fudd is correct. The Schmenges were from the fictional Leutonia.
I believe the OP was confusing the Schmenge brothers with the Festrunk Brothers on SNL. Dan Ackroyd and Steve Martin played Georgi and Yortuk, two wild and crazy Czechoslovakian brothers.
I dunno, he names John Candy, one of the Schmenges (alongside Eugene Levy, I believe).
The Wiki page explains it all: They were Leutonian (fictional country).
Interestingly, the inspiration for the Schmenges was Gaby Haas, an Edmonton polka playing accordianist… and Gaby was Czechoslovakian.
I couldn’t find any videos of Gaby Haas and the Barndance Gang, but trust me the Schmenges were not too far off the mark.
