I need some new comics… I am going to talk to my vendor and have him change my order and stop receiving:
Ultimates
Ultimate Fantastic Four
Ultimate Iron Man.
I already get:
Ultimate Spider-man
Batman
Detective Comics
100 bullets
Hellblazer
Rising Stars (when it comes out)
Legends of the Dark Knight
Amazing Spider-man
Losers
Y the Last Man
Powers (when it comes out)
Batman/Superman
Gotham Knights
and a few more I can’t think of right now. Based on what I get, what do you think I might like? I am thinking Green Lantern and Swamp Thing might be good, any thoughts?
Definitely Green Lantern. I’d also recommend JSA, Astro City, All Star Superman (it isn’t out yet but it should be good). Joss Whedon’s (of Angel, Buffy, and Firefly fame) Astonishing X-men has also been quite good so far (see, I’m not a total DC shill…just, mostly).
As I am sure that you probably know, DC Comics is getting ready to have some major shake-ups, so you might want to get the main Infinite Crisis mini-series.
If you like Y, you should enjoy Vaughan’s Wildstorm title, Ex Machina, about a super-hero who becomes mayor of New York, but not campy. It’s on like issue #14 or so, but there’s a TPB of the first six issues out.
Slight hijack, but I read this one and agreed with your assessment. You could definitely tell it was written by Vaughn. Not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing, but I liked it enough to get the next installment when it comes out.
(The reason you could tell it was written by Vaughn is because Yorrick is the main character in both; which is to say Vaughn is the main character in both. At least, his idealized version of himself.)
And I also read the latest Y:TLM despite my misgivings with the previous volume. Better, but still not the greatest.
I liked Ex Machina too, but I’m only reading it in TPB form. Other than that, the only “current” books I’ve been interested in lately are:
Planetary (I read it in TPBs as well, due to the slow shipping schedule)
Dan Slott’s She-Hulk (on hiatus, but there are two TPBs)
Warren Ellis’ Iron Man (this one is very slow, so wait for the TPB)
Ed Brubaker’s Sleeper (three TPBs so far, with a fourth and final one yet to come, plus the “prequel,” Point Blank)
Gail Simone’s Villains United (mostly because I’m a fan of the late-'80s Suicide Squad concept and the Deadshot and Catman characters).
