What newsgroup to you use?

How many of you fellow dopers out there use the unsenet? I’ve always just used the one provided by my ISP, but I want to hit some alt.binaries.cd.images… and I thought I’d try to find a pay newsgroup provider that has longer retention periods than my local ISP.

Imagine my surprise when my provider of choice (SuperNews) only has a retention of about 4.5 days for my selected groups.

  1. Is this average for most pay newsgroup providers?

  2. What newsgroups do youze guys like?

  3. Any other comments or suggestions?

How do you know its 4.5 days? I use supernews too but I only consider the number of messages in the group not the days retention.

I suppose the number of messages is related to the retention period.

If you go out to their websight (http://www.supernews.com) you can drill down to a page that will let you type in the newsgroup name, or you could just click here

By the way, I ended up going with GigaNews.

A “newsgroup” is, for example, alt.fan.cecil-adams, alt.banjo, or comp.sys.palmtops. The term “usenet” describes generally the set of all newsgroups.

Your service provider will give you access to some or all of the newsgroups, and there are for-pay providers that are higher performance, archive messages longer, have access to more newsgroups, etc.
