What, no The Newsroom thread?

Is there that much hate for the show?

So what’s the topic here? Are we supposed to discuss the show? Or how we feel about the show? Or the possible reasons why there wasn’t a thread on this topic before now? How meta are we getting?

I dunno, I was just surprised no one had started a thread three minutes before the season premiere.

I liked this evening’s episode, but then I really like the show. Will be sad to see it end.

Charlie & Will dressing down staff for their cheering to CNN’s mistake was good. The balcony scene at the was a little overcrowded, but with only 6 episodes in the final season Sorkin has a lot of material to cover.

I wish they would get rid of the background music; it’s annoying, unnecessary and inappropriate for this type of show.

More Sloan. Much more. Drool.

I was reading an article about this season and one thing they said was that there would be more story lines with Sloan.

All the spy-tension in retrieving the USB drive and going into a darkened room and unpacking the pristine computer was kind of undercut when I wondered if they were going to spend 45 minutes on him configuring Windows to run the first time.

Though I appreciated it, the dialogue was too complex for the common viewer. Every fucking character, every fucking line, spoke on a Shakespearan/Einsteinian level. It’s like Sorkin was trying to shove “look, I’m a clever writer,” down America’s collective throat. Not surprised it didn’t last past season 3.

I have to turn on closed captioning for this show. For one thing, Emily Mortimer’s accent is so thick, I can’t understand what she’s saying. Also, the dialogue thing.

This show is still on?

So did I. On top of that, it really bothered me that he got a laptop instead of a desktop. That computer would (especially in an apartment) likely find a wireless signal before he even had a chance to shut it off. I mean, I suppose it doesn’t really matter if he never turns it back on again, but why not just buy a desktop computer with no wifi card and not plug it into the router. According to Will, an air-gapped computer is a computer that’s never been connected to the internet and Neal’s probably, by that definition, isn’t anymore.

But that’s probably all moot anyways since A)I’d be surprised if they explored that and B)it looks like he’s going to come clean to the suits in the next episode.

Yeah, but it took a REALLY long break and this is the last season and it’s going to be a short one I think.

Did they originally plan on only three season?

At least this year one the stories they’re doing is something most people are pretty familiar with.

I don’t particularly like HBO’s The Newsroom. BUT, there’s a completely different CBC series of identical name which I stumbled upon looking for the HBO series. It’s a silly comedy, but I found it hilarious! (The link will take you to the beginning of the 1st episode.)

(PS: My mysterious Internet problems make it very difficult for me to access many websites normally. This is my very 1st post via freshly-downloaded Tor with AdblockPlus on a USB stick. Wish me luck!)

We had to pause watching for a moment when we saw Kundu in the documents Neal was looking at, we were laughing so much. Nice little wink/nudge to west wing fans there, Mr.Sorkin must do yoga or something to be so adept at patting himself on the back.

Also, how is it so difficult to come up with groomsmen for Will? Mac is talking about 9 bridemaids because in addition to coworkers she’s including all their sisters. Will spazzes out because Mr.Likability has no friends, but don’t either of them have brothers or brothers-in-law to match up with all those sisters? Sheesh.

Maggie looked really good with her hair grown out a bit and wearing nerdy glasses. I’d like to know what Jim’s girlfriend Hallie is doing suddenly working there without explanation. Sloan remains awesome.

I assume that Neal either used the hardware switch to put the computer in airplane mode, or went into the BIOS and disabled the wireless and wired network ports.

But why did he need to go out and buy an airgapped computer? Couldn’t he just have wiped an existing computer and installed Windows or Linux on it?

And when Neal said that he told the source to put additional data on a CD-R, I knew he was in trouble.

Because, according to Will/the show, an airgapped computer is one that has never been connected to the internet.
IMO, there’s no reason why they couldn’t just dig up an old computer and say this one will never be connected again. Use it for this project and then logically and physically destroy it when they’re done.

I mean, it really doesn’t matter if it’s been connected to the internet before the files were on it, just after.

I really, really doubt that they have open wi-fi in the office. It may find a signal but it wouldn’t connect to the network. Hence no internet.

Ohhhhhhhh yeah…

My HP laptop has a little button you can push to turn on or turn off wifi connectivity. Maybe it was as simple as that.

I beleive he was at home when he unboxed the new computer and, like I said, it likely would have latched on to someone’s unsecured network.

My HP does as well, but it’s a ‘software’ button, I’m not sure how far into the boot sequence the computer has to be before I can toggle it. OTOH, my Toshiba had a physical switch (what headaches I’d have when I’d bump that by accident and not know it). I suppose if they were going to go the laptop route it would have been nice if the first thing they would have done, before even turning it on (I mean, they showed him starting to configure it) would be to show him disabling the wifi. Either by turning it off, or by unscrewing the bottom of the computer and popping out the wifi chip that’s magically just sitting right there waiting to be pried out.

Of course, as I said, it really doesn’t matter if it connects to the internet before he puts the jump drive in it, just after. It’s just that the way Will explained what an air gapped computer is, it should have been off the grid before it was even turned on.

The button on my HP is also physical. When I’m booting up while flying, or wher there are a lot of hotspots, I toggle it off because otherwise the boot seems to take forever.
