I was born in 1961, and I started reading Cecil’s column in the LA Reader in 1983. The batteries just crapped out in my calculator and I’m too lazy to go look for the solar one, so (1 – (22/47))%.
Depends on the definition of Doper. In the strict “member of this message board” sense – 17.77%. But I started using Cecil’s points to back up arguments in print here in NZ back around 1986-1987 or so, as soon as I found the first of his books I laid my paws on in a secondhand bookstore. So, seeing as I’m 45 now, that’s very close to the “half my life” mark.
. . . said the man operating a computer thousands of times more powerful than those used to plan the moon landings.
Mreh? I’m 35.9%, but I’m younger than you. By months, I’m 115/320.
Though I was on the website and reading the books before March 1999.
51% – Been a consistent reader & fan & advocate of Dope for 21 years.
13.5% – If you’re only counting board membership
Oh boy, math.
Started in 2000, that’s 8 years. I’m 38. 8 is to 38 as X is to 100. Ummm…
I got nothin’.
8 * 100 / 38 = 21%
edit: your join date suggests 9 years, so 9 * 100 / 38 = 23.6%
Very roughly, about 31%, and legally, at least, all of my adult life. I joined when I was 18. I’ll be 28 in a few months. Odd to think.
10.71% if I did the math right.
You are aware that the SDMB existed in another form before March 1999, right? I’ve been around since October 1997. I didn’t actually calculate by month, I just rounded by the years. It would actually be greater if I did that.
ETA: Although for about a year and a half in 1999-2000 I wasn’t around. I signed up as soon as the SDMB moved from AOL to the web, but I was abroad at the time and had a terrible connection, and then I forgot about it for awhile.
33%, give or take a fraction of a percent.
I hung out as soon as the AOL board allowed non AOL people on that one. I was there mostly getting the Straight Dope online. I’ve read the Straight Dope since the end of 1980, which I got from the Madison based Isthmus. They always had a best of the year issue that was indispensable for entertainment venues, and many funny awards that people voted on for the winners. I also started to pick up the Onion which was a Madison based free paper at that time.
I’d consider anybody that read The Straight Dope to be a Doper since they read the column and not when they joined the boards. That put’s me at about 61%
Let’s see 9/54=16.66%
Not sure. Date says 32%, however I took a year or two off during the middle so I can’t say for sure.
In April it’ll be 25%. Joining your birth month makes it easier to figure out
25%
I have been on this board about 20% of my life, depending on how you want to calculate the math. I think about half my life if you count from when I first encountered Cecil’s writings. And if you are using the word “doper” in its other common meaning…nah, not telling;).
Approximately 10%. It’s just over 5 years since I started lurking obsessively.
Ok, since we’re including lurking and reading Cecil, I’m upping my percentage to 27%.
~21%
Feck me that’s quite a bit.
