What Page for Book Dedication?

I’ve been giving books to people for years, and was just wondering about something I always do. When I write inside the book something like “Congratulation to X, love Y”, what page should it go on?

  1. The endpapers (if so, which side? and does it make a difference if the endpapers are white vs. colored?)
  2. The title page (if so, which one?)

I have a book that has:
a) Colored endpaper
b) Page with title and author, blank on back.
c) Another page with title and author, and a little graphic, ISBN info on back.
d) Yet ANOTHER page with title and author and a little graphic, blank on back.

What if the title page spans two facing pages?

p.s. I am NOT the author of the book. Would it make a difference if I were the author? Once I heard someone (who was an author, but was dedicating a DIFFERENT author’s book to someone) say that the proper place was to put the dedication at the END (since he wasn’t the author of that particular book).

I know this sounds like a Seinfeld question, but I’ve been wondering and though I might as well ask!!!

Wherever you want to put it.

There’s an official location, but the law is rarely enforced and usually the judge will let you off with under ten years for a first-time offense.
