what percent of my paycheck goes to fight marijuana laws?

OK - for those of you who don’t know I’m a huge supporter of reforming marijuana laws. What I’m wondering is what percent of my paycheck goes towards fighting the unjust war on marijuana. Also, how much money does the United States Government spend per year solely on fighting marijuana? In relation to the way that the DEA budgets it’s money, what percent of their annual budget goes to fight marijuana, cocaine, heroin, etc.

Thanks.

You’re asking for a good bit of down and dirty research, which I really don’t have time for right now. If you’re good at trawling through info, 30 minutes from now you could have all your answers if you start at fedstats.gov

I don’t think any of your tax money goes toward fighting marijuana LAWS…

I suspect that it would be hard to compute this. As far as I know, government agencies don’t usually budget specific amounts for specific drugs. At best, you could probably come up with a number for total spending on enforcement of drug laws. Even that, however, would probably have to be an estimate, because there are a lot of government bodies, such as the courts and local police departments, that enforce drug laws but also do a lot of other things.

Saluki_fan, don’t you know that only conservatives have the right to complain about tax money being spent on things which go against their beliefs?

Many years ago I read stats on this in High Times. I do not think those figures would be accurate, but you may be able to find them here http://www.hightimes.com/ht/splash/ although it may take a while.

The answer (IMHO) however is too damn much.

None. Every penny of your taxes goes to fund the National Endowment for the Arts. Or NASA. Or the Marines.

It’s the only way you’ll be able to sleep at night.
