What percentage of white America do you believe is racist?

poll

Define racist. Racism is a spectrum, and pretty much everyone of all races, genders, nationalities, ethnic groups, etc engages in various forms of bigotry.

I’d seriously doubt that more than a tiny percentage of people are truly non-racist.

Having said that, what % of white America truly believe in the tenets of white nationalism (even though those same people would publicly oppose groups that support this like the KKK and nazis)? I’d guess 25% of them.

This is about people’s perception of racism so I’m letting each user define it. Besides, if everybody here could manage to agree on a definition of racism, I would buy a hat and eat it

I think 100% of humans use a person’s race at least as a Bayesian prior.

yeah, lousy poll because definition is so vague.

If you define racism as an unconscious bias in favor of people who look like you and against people who don’t, I think we are all racist.

If you define racism as avowed and unabashed white supremacism, I think it’s a small minority albeit a significant one.

You aren’t going to get any useful data without nailing it down some.

The definitive answer.

This is about people’s perception of racism so I’m letting each user define it.

I would be happy to vote on a better phrased poll that you create.

The poll is invalid. It lacks food.

You lacked the 100% option and you specifically targeted white people. Virtually all people are racists or at least ethnic bigots. It is just basic human psychology. You can try to teach around it but can never get rid of it completely. Watch the international news or just read a history book. People will very literally slaughter children that aren’t like them. It has happened for thousands of years and isn’t going away. I would be astounded if I found someone that wasn’t racist in some sort of way but mostly because it would be so odd and indicate an extreme deviation from the norm.

Quick, think of a chair. I know what you just thought of but that is not the only kind or even the most common one. The human brain is predisposed towards stereotyping all kinds of groups at every level and it restarts with every new generation.

This needs some more detail. I believe the vast majority of people racist to some extent, regardless of their own skin color. But is it “All black people are no-good thugs” racist, or only “I would slightly prefer to date a white man rather than a black man” racist?

I voted 80%, but some replies in this thread are making me want to change my vote to 95%+…

If racism = doesn’t want black people living next door, I’d guess 30%.
If racism = doesn’t want black guys dating their daughter, I’d say 90%.
I’m guessing, of course, but “pretty damn racist” wasn’t a poll option.

If the question is about an individual speaking/acting in a racist way to another individual, it is a relatively low percentage.

If the question is about being part of an empowered population that collectively (mostly in subconscious and social/cultural ways) supports a system that promotes opportunities for their self-identified group and limits opportunities for “Others” - hmm.

Also: are the empowered population(s) in the U.S. doing anything different from the empowered populations in other countries and regions? I am NOT saying it is okay, just that it is what happens in large communities.

I went with 10%, but I think the number is likely somewhere between 5-10%. I think the folks who are saying 90+ % of people being racist are way off. In my personal experience, most people I meet are not racist. I don’t pass my typical day noting people discriminating against racial minorities. Yes, it exists, but if almost everyone was racist I think we would have open marches of the KKK, racial minorities almost totally segregated, etc. If almost everyone white person was racist the trope of white people saying things lie “I’m not racist, I have lot’s of black fiends*” being a hidden racist wouldn’t exist. The reason some white people who are racist say things like that is because they know most other white people are not racist and would disagree with them for being racist. If most white people are racist, wouldn’t they all come out and admit it? I could go on about all the different things that wouldn’t make sense if most people were racist (shaming the people at the Charlottesville protest who were successfully identified is another) but the simpler explanation is that most white people (and most black people) are not racist.

  • I also think that some people who say that are telling the truth, that they really do have black friends and that they aren’t racist.

This is my answer as well. My reasoning is the percentage change of white voters who switched to the GOP instead of voting for Obama. I figure that’s close enough because there are certainly racists who would never consider voting for a Democrat but also non-racists who just didn’t like Obama for whatever reason so they balance out to a degree. And the latter certainly outnumber the former, so I think the number is closer to 10% since the actual white swing IIRC was less than 10%.

Not that the poll asked, but the same evidence points to the same order of magnitude of black people being racist, since Obama’s actual policies were not different from his predecessors, but the stats make it appear, to put it glibly, that a single-digit percentage of black people thought “ehhh, them white people are all the same, why bother?” but then got enthused about Obama while failing to realize that his white predecessors were worth supporting just as much.

I was going to put it somewhere between 10-25% - interpreting it as folk who hold racial prejudices exceeding “I’d prefer to date…” But the more I think, the more likely that it is higher.

At the max, what percentage of white Americans are married to people of different race? Of course, might the white guy with a black wife hate asians?

Of course, not sure why the question is restricted to whites.

Impossible poll.

All Americans are racist, you all look the same and talk funny too.

Racist compared to what?

If you mean “What % are KKK/Richard Spencer type bigots?” Maybe 1%.

If you mean, “What % hold some attitudes or beliefs that the far left would deem racist?” Probably 80%.

I voted 40 percent. The racist line for me is “secretly resents perceived white persecution”.

Before the line are things like “tells ethnic jokes” or “makes broad racial generalizations”. Before the line to me is not nice, but tolerable. Past the line, unacceptable behavior and I will avoid you if I can.

I can’t answer. The actual number is 32.5%, and rounding up to 40% or down to 25% would appear biased.
