What percentage of white America do you believe is racist?

A more interesting poll could be how people chose to interpret the question they were being polled about. I do not think you can even interpret that these results mean anything about the population answering this poll perceives.

Does it have to be literally the KKK? Because Charlottesville

Oh, it does have to literally be the KKK? OK, then

The KKK has no problem having open marches in America (hell, the ACLU will help them do it). They may not be unopposed marches, but they have no problem showing their racist faces in public (or running for office, either)

It is true that there are many people who see racism where it doesn’t exist or use it to push a political agenda. But it is also true that there are many people who use the argument “I don’t think that thing I (or a person I agree with) said or did is racist, therefore anyone who calls it racist must be one of those people overreacting or pushing a political agenda” without ever considering the possibility that the thing was actually racist - because as noted above very, very few people consider themselves racist.

I would also argue that the second group is much, much larger than the first.

Come on, you’re being silly. If racism was that prevalent in white America we’d have a Klan endorsed president who proposed policies specifically intended to keep whites in the majority.

(What does “Wow…wow” mean? I’m also curious as to where you learned to talk like that?)

Yes, your racist poll targeted WHITE Americans. That was your choice, not mine. It’s my perception that your poll is racist. No need for you to be so defensive.

Meanwhile, I’ve noticed that there have been a variety of complaints about your poll. Based on all of the complaints, I would say that your perceived results (post #49 listed below) are just as flawed as your poll.

*We are now at 147 votes and I’m updating the results:

If we go by the median, it’s fair to say that most dopers thinks that around 40% of white america is racist.

If we go by the average, the number is 40.6%.

This number is actually very close to Trump’s approval rating. I realize this is anecdotal so let’s not make anything else of it.

Given the lack of rigor of this poll, I’m going to say ±10% so somewhere between 30% and 50% of white America is perceived as racist. Perception, optics, you know. How things look. Not claiming to know what’s reallllly in people’s hearts or any such thing, ok?*

Given the admitted lack of rigor of this poll, I don’t think it’s “fair” to draw any conclusions from your poll. It’s at best anecdotal.

Here’s a test. You’re out driving and a guy cuts you off. Is your mental reaction any different for a black guy than for a white? Me, I just think “asshole” and race doesn’t enter into it.

Firstly agree that the poll is somewhat daft. How can you let responders define what Blibble is and then ask about the prevelance of Blibble? Whatever answer you get is meaningless.

Secondly, while it’s true that we’re all racist to one extent or another, I do think it’s meaningful to talk about some places being more racist than others, or trending in one direction or another. Frankly a lot of the news coming out of the US about white supremicist groups and hate crimes have been very disturbing to hear, but I don’t live in the US and can’t gauge whether they reflect a shift in the general mood of the population.

Finally on the Trump Obama thing: there’s no equivalency there. Imagine a black guy sending out texts full of spelling errors and demonstrable lies. Making insulting remarks to women, and defending men accused of assaulting women, while himself also being accused of similar crimes. How about if a black pride group held a rally where they ploughed a car into a group of protesters and then Obama called them “very fine people”?
Frankly no-one should get a pass for this kind of behaviour, but it speaks volumes the extent to which many people are fine with a white guy doing all this whereas a black guy can’t wear a tan suit.

Good one.

I just thought of another rule of thumb:

IME the most racist people often really struggle to understand what racism even is.
So: if when asked to define racism, if you find you can only define it in terms of specific actions (e.g. “It’s racist if you call someone a <whatever>”), or you can’t help reflexively talking about what racism isn’t, then yeah, I’d say you’re likely to be a racist.

Not to generalize or anything

 Perish the thought.
