As per The Onion, approximately what percentage of your waking hours are spent staring at glowing rectangles? TVs, computer monitors, cell phones, mp3 players, digital watches/clocks, electronic billboards, etc.
I must admit that my own number is distressingly high, probably very close to the 90% figure in the article. Let’s try to figure it out. In a given week, the amount of time not spent looking at the rectangles includes:
6 Hours cooking/preparing food
3 Hours traveling on the subway (mostly reading)
1.5 Hours on the can (again, reading)
2 Hours bathing/grooming
4 Hours eating/drinking (ok, drinking) with friends
3 Hours running errands/shopping
2 Hours purposely reading hard copy (I know, I know)
3 Hours (?) miscellaneous
So, if I’m awake for 112 Hours a week, then I spend about 78.1% of my waking hours staring at glowing triangles. I’m helped by the fact that I cook actual meals for myself, but hurt by the fact that I eat in front of the TV.
What’s your number, give or take?
