I’m currently fighting the ugly mole for the third star in Toy Time Galaxy.
I fucking hate the new boing-boing-spring Mario power up. I fucking hate how it’s almost impossible to controll. I hate having to do a mini boss fight using this stupid fucking power up.
Anyway. The game is great, but as with all incarnation of Super Mario, there are levels / stretches / worlds / whatever that are so incredibly frustrating and annoying, I really want to throw the controllers across the room and stomp the console. I guess, in a way, it’s part fo the fun too. Once you make it, you think “No way in hell I’m going back there again” - which of course you’ll have to, in order to get that super secret star that’s needed to unlock whatever.
So which is your favorite annoyance with the game right now?
Honestly, almost nothing. I enjoyed practically every level, and am amazed they were able to maintain that level of quality through the whole game. With that said, some of those damn 100 purple coin levels really pissed me off, as they really test some of your skills.
Haven’t been there yet, as I haven’t found the third green star. I’m trying to avoid the second encounter with Kaliente, as the first try showed that I need to have a lot of patience and finger dexteriety to kill the bugger.
The daredevil comet at Melty Molten Galaxy, oh man that destroyed me. It shouldn’t have been that hard, but I kept making so many stupid mistakes, and with the daredevil comet one mistake kills you. I haven’t even gotten all the regular stars there yet, but when I eventually go back there I’ll have the whole level layout memorized from having to do it so many times.
I’m constantly nagged by the purple coin star at the Ghostly galaxy, as I’ve tried it a dozen times and still can’t get it. I have no idea how it’s possible to get all 100 in under a minute. I get you have to use the bumpers somehow, but still, so many coins, so little time, it’s impossible!
The key to doing that (and it will take multiple tries) is to intentionally wildly overshoot the grab stars. Click on one to build up momentum and then let go to fly past into a crowd of coins. It’s also important to let go at the height of your speed, you slow down as you approach the grab stars so the midpoint is where to go for it.
I always hate the swimming levels the most. I have the hardest time controlling Mario in the water. And the globe type atmosphere of some of the swimming has really had me bonkers a few times. So I typically fly through those without a lot of poking around and stuff.
That said, I’m only 61 stars in, seems all of you are farther than I. As the hidden stars got more, well, hidden… I decided to beat all my regular levels before I go back for the hidden ones.
I’m enjoying the comets- but the last one that I ended up having to quit was the race against Shadow Mario in (ah hell, I don’t remember the name of the galaxy) the 2nd bee oriented galaxy. I could beat him up to the second series of jumps up to the wooden straightaway… but I can’t seem to get those jumps accurately without falling off. Or if I do, it’s to slow and he’s passed me with no chance of me catching up. grrr… I’ll get him yet!
The Spring Mario suit and the Toy Time Galaxy, by association, deeply offend me. Is there even a way to kill or even shut off those laser-shooting mini-robots? The Mario stomp does nothing!
My favourite Galaxies so far have been Honeyhive and Beach Bowl. I’m kind of disappointed that, 56 stars in, I still haven’t seen Galaxies as appealing as those early two. Gold Leaf’s pretty too, but it’s really just a Honeyhive rehash.
Seconded! Not necessarily because they are so difficult, but because of the control difficulty you mentioned, plus, it’s so sloooooow! Bores the hell out of me.
Always been that way with the water worlds in all Super Mario games.
EDIT: How can you NOT like the spring power up!? I love it.
EDIT2: Oops, that last part looked like it was directed at The Tof also. It wasn’t.
You can do the spin move underwater, and it gives you a burst of speed. So if you want to get somewhere fast in the water, just keep jiggling the wiimote. It’s like cranking a propellor.
Haaaaaaaate! HAAAAAAAAAATE! God, that Galaxy was the closest I’d come to not wanting to play the game anymore. Very, very frustrating, and the dumbest power up to boot. I’d been a completionist with the game to that point, getting every star possible, but after finally getting through the springing around, I just moved on.
I’ll tell you where you can shove that spring, Mario.
(I love this game in every other way, just to be clear – it’s fantastic!)
I’m not sure I like Ice Mario, but skating Mario is a lot of fun. Cosmic racing in the freezeflame galaxy took a whole bunch of lives (~20) but it was still fun, not frustrating.
Toy Time and Dreadnaught are the most annoying galaxies and the singular most annoying planet is Gizmos and Gadgets (?) in the Trials galaxy, the one where Mario runs on a ball.
Oh, and flying Mario is no improvement on swimming Mario. Same stuff in the air.
I’m doing the final Bowser battle now, but after 2 glasses of wine, I realized that playing Mario while tipsy is not a good idea.
That guy was a pain, just because of the trouble I had trying to catch up with him in order to deliver the final blow (“Stop running around, you jerk!”). I think all-in-all it took me like 4 or 5 lives just to beat him. So, that’s probably the most frustrating part so far.
I don’t remember doing the 100 Purple Coin thing in the Ghostly galaxy - I must have missed that one. Well, better head back over there this weekend.
As a side note: I would probably have a lot more frustrating encounters, if I didn’t have the help from the second player.
(Galena assists FTW! :D)
Likewise, much credit goes to Jakeline for her handy wand work. I’m not sure I could have gotten throughthe secret area on the back of the mountain behind the boss battle on the snow/ice worldwithout her!
Chalk up another vote for the toy time galaxy…at least, for the Purple coin hunt in Toy time galaxy. I’m ONE friggin’ star away from 120. ONE STAR. And I can’t beat it cause it’s that world.
Use long jumps to cross the long gaps with coins, jump from one coin to the next to preserve as many tiles as you can, and use spin jumps in the corner to grab the coins hovering in air,
But yeah, it is a pain, though I found the Dreadnought one to be even worse.
Luigi’s Purple Coins (the purple coin episode from Toy Time Galaxy) was my bane… and my vote for hardest star in the game. It took me, i’m pretty sure, nothing short of 100 tries. Just keep at it, the real trick is to use long jumps and spin moves to to get you to go further (and to pick up those coins floating over nothing.)
