What "Poor" Things Do You Think You'd Do If You Won The Lotto?

I think we’d probably buy a nice piece of land out in the country… preferably one with a lovely old farmhouse on it. We’d grow even bigger vegetable gardens. We might try keeping chickens or pigs.

Basically, the money would allow us to dabble with the fun aspects of being farmers. Not an unusual thing for people with too much money to do.

I’d still shop at the commisary and the PX…because even if I had that kind of money and they “forced” me to retire from the military (I’d voluntarily get out if I won that much cash), I’d still be a cheapskate.

I don’t need a fancy car, nor does my wife. I’d get a new car, but it would be another Jeep, only with the bells and whistles.

I’d still rent, instead of own, my family’s housing. To be sure, it would be at a multiple of the square footage we presently make do with. But I don’t relish the idea of being resonsible for the property.

I forgot to add: My hot trophy wife would be a cheapskate, too.

The one poor thing I do is read the OP completely to see what information it’s requesting and not contribute the exact opposite in a reply to the thread.

So if I won the lottery, that would be the first thing that went right out the window.

I’d still be hitting estate sales. I enjoy the thrill of the hunt for cool stuff.

My favorite residential architectural style is Craftsman/Arts & Crafts, which doesn’t lend itself to large houses. I’d probably build a decent-sized bungalow, maybe 2500 square feet, but nothing extravagant.

I’d probably drive a regular car. I’m considering a Subaru Legacy for my next vehicle. I’d probably get the loaded version.

I quote Office Space:

Peter Gibbons: I would relax… I would sit on my ass all day… I would do nothing.
Lawrence: Well, you don’t need a million dollars to do nothing, man. Take a look at my cousin: he’s broke, don’t do shit.

This does not really address the OP but it seems like a good place to share this story about lottery wins.

Ooooh, I’d be able to buy me a couple of flats/houses in choice locations, decorate them with whatever I fancied, and spend my between-jobs times in whichever one I chose, plunking down the whole price for free (they’re removing the “mortgage benefit” from our income tax, so I wouldn’t even have that to consider).

I’d still be buying the snazzy computers for the snazzy flats at the best price I could find, though :stuck_out_tongue: And working (I happen to like my line of work, even though sometimes I hate the specific jobs). And driving a Yaris hutchback (but it would absolutely get that whole-body paintjob I’ve been thinking of, some sort of rainbowy tie-dye look…). And using my fidelity cards. I would not get cleaners because I don’t like them and don’t need them, but I’d locate, for each flat, one person or agency to come do occasional work and be available for emergencies when I’m not in (“the neighbor below has a drip on his ceiling”).

This isn’t “poor” per se, but I’d live in a modest home and stay in modest hotels. In my experience, fancy housing costs are pretty much a waste. I stayed in the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago once; in many ways, it was the worst hotel I’d ever visited.

I wold probably still rent, rather than buy a home.

I’d like to own a home eventually, whether I win the lotto or not, but at this point in my life (in my 20’s, single, no kids or even pets,) it’s just a lot easier to rent. Even ignoring the money issue (which is the biggest limiting factor for me now, so that would go away,) I’d still have to worry about doing all the paperwork right, getting insurance, yelling at kids to stay off my lawn, etc…

I’d move into a nicer place, and I would no longer have to have roommates, but I’d still be renting…and Hell, I might rent a whole house (a small one,) but again…still renting. Let someone else worry about mowing the lawn, plowing the driveway, and fixing the roof.

I’d still frequent garage sales, library sales, the used bins in music shops, antique shops and the odd consignment shop, because you will find items for sale in these and similar venues that are out of production/out of print. Take music, for ex. – some of my happiest musical discoveries were of albums that had gone OOP, because tastes change, the industry sucks, and frankly, much of the public’s tastes suck, as does their willingness to rip their music for free and/or in MP3 format.

“Reading’s hard.”

[hijack] So, how is little Chaos doing? [/hijack]

I would probably turn into some flavor of travel junkie. I would probably just live in a nice apartment but nothing wild. I would much rather invest and create a world where my kids and I will pretty much be able to afford any schooling they want.

Probably keep my truck for a while.

Probably still shop at target/walmart.

Probably still eat fast food here and there

Probably still keep working but probably only in a mangerial role, sign off checks, little hiring and firing of managers, stuff like that.
