What popular work has spawned the most band names?

What popular work has spawned the most band names? Movie, TV show, book, other band, whatever.

For example, Nerf Herder, famous for the Buffy theme song, took their name from the Star Wars universe. I’m sure there are other Star Wars-derived band names out there. And I’d guess Star Wars is a good candidate for the most band-influential popular work, but I really have no idea.

(For purposes of this question, fictional bands do not count. The bands in question should have existed and probably recorded some music, or at least toured around a bit.)

Okay, I’m bumping this thread.

Possible candidates:

Star Wars
Monty Python
The Simpsons
Tolkein’s works

Any other suggestions? Any lists of bands with names taken from particular works? Bueller?

Well Marillion is named for Silmarillion the tolkein work.

How about the bible, that gives us Genisis, Field’s of Nephilim, and many more I’m sure

Also (off the top of my head) Jesus Jones, MC 900 Ft. Jesus, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Nazareth, Judas Priest, etc., etc.

How about 1984? From that we got Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis Joplin’s band). Any others?

Um. Well. I hadn’t thought of that one, which is probably the winner by a mile.

So I’ll just refine the question: what popular work(s) post-Shakespeare has spawned the most band names?

There are about 2,000 mostly obscure progressive rock bands named after Tolkein characters and places. Shadowfax, Isildur’s Bane, at least two or three different Gandalfs, Rivendell (apparently two different ones with different spellings), Galadriel, Cirith Ungol, Lothlorien, Iluvatar, Mirthrandir, and probably a host of others.

Oh no, Biffy does that mean you like prog rock too. Are you me in some fight-club like co-existance?

But of course. See my list of concerts in this thread. Ironically, though, I forgot to list Marillion, whom I’ve seen twice. (Funny story about seeing Marillion on the Clutching at Straws tour, which ties in with another recent thread…during the last song, when Fish was exhorting the audience to clap along, he pointed directly at me because I wasn’t clapping. The reason was that I had a tape recorder in my hands! But what could I do? I shoved the tape recorder between my knees and clapped!)

BiffyHave you tried King Crimson? I never saw Marillion+Fish being a late developer of good music taste. [/ hyjack]

OT, Duran Duran of course comes from Barbarella but I think they are the only band from that source. Anyone know any Star Trek named bands?

Warp 11, SPOCK, and Vulcan Dub Squad to name a few.

There are lots of bands/performers named for Dickens characters, but not from any particular one:

Tiny Tim
Little Nell
Uriah Heep
Artful Dodger

I’m a HUGE fan of King Crimson; I once got to interview Robert Fripp, and I made a couple of very minor contributions to Sid Smith’s excellent book on the band.

Spock’s Beard, T.J. Kirk, T’Pau.
