What Public Figures Were Outed Against Their Will?

It’s pretty easy to “out” someone by accusation. That doesn’t constitute determining the truth. That’s the problem with all these innuendos and stories that people have heard, etc. If I say that I heard that Wilt Chamberlain was gay - or at least bisexual - someone will pass that along and it will potentially morph into “common wisdom.” Be careful out there.

Nitpick perhaps, but as I recall, Turing was “outed” after going to the London police regarding a burglary committed at his home and after catching the thief, Turing was charged for the crime of “Gross Indecency” and convicted. He agreed to Estrogen Treatment rather than jail time and then committed suicide some 18 months after the charges were made. He had far more serious consequences than losing his security clearance.

Was the same one George Maharis frequented?

Hey kidchameleon, what’s with the cocked eyebrow?

Hector Archibald Macdonald was a British general who was posted to Celon at the turn of the last century. He had been a lower-class enlisted soldier who’d rose in the ranks, and this rubbed the English planters the wrong way. So they either outed him or fabricated lies of his sexual encounters with Ceylonese boys. He was sent back to England in 1903, where he shot himself at his hotel soon after arriving.

Later, in World War One, a German General of Scots ancestry named August Von Mackensen was serving on the Eastern Front (he’s pictured wearing a Death’s Head Hussar’s busby in the IMHO “Silliest Military Hat” thread). Because of the similarities in names, and because it was believed that he’d fight for Germany only against Russian but not British troops, the rumor arose that Macdonald had faked his death and joined up with the Germans.

The fact that when the ‘gays were supposed to rush the stage’, Jody Foster, who has lots 'o rumors of being gay, was the one who rushed to the stage. So it could have sorta been that the gays did storm the stage, just with one figurehead. Or not. It just caught me as funny in a strange sort of way.

Anderson Cooper is a public figure who may have accidentally outed himself in an interview with Jerry Falwell last year. From his NNDB listing:

Actually, he was first outed by AmericaBlog.

It wasn’t long after that Guckert/Gannon made his Daily Show debut, though.

Bob Crane?

Pretty serious consequences to the British Computer industry, too. It never achieved much after this. You could say the industry died with Turing.
