What "real" wealth is all about; "authentic Indian cuisine" (Winston Smith in UK)...

Yeah, posting from my damned Blackberry again. I’ll never learn. If I had a nickle for every Blackberry-induced multipost…

I’d like to retract this statement. I misread the thread and thought Vetch was #*!+ing with me all unprovoked and whatnot. I was wrong - Vetch was replying to a post.

Sorry. My bad. I’m a scrounging $!?*. I suck. Sorry Vetch. Seriously. I read you comment out of context.

Poor Winston, so confused. He must be pining for home. Let’s take him to McDonalds and buy him a Budweiser! Hey, maybe later we can take him to the movies- Slither’s coming out soon, I think.

I think he’s had one too many John Smiths!

And Black Velvet sounds pukey to me.
tikka chicken, eh? Next time I’m in England, I’ll give it go.

I am so jealous that you are there, Winny --I wanna go back. NOT to London, though–I’ve been to London 3 times–I want to get out into the countryside…

No worries.

By the way, since I live near Windsor I have been warned not to go near there tomorrow as there are celebrations for the Queen’s 80th birthday, with 21 gun salutes etc. You are lucky to be leaving in time to miss them.

Having slogged through the “Picky Eater” thread, I want to commend you for wanting to try Indian food, eleanorigby. IMHO, 'tis the food of the Gods, but it doesn’t sit well with some people and that’s OK too. Kudos to you for wanting to give it a go!

Might it be worthwhile to try to find Indian food closer to home to see how it sits with you, so as not to risk jeopardizing your digestive system on your next trip to the UK? [I don’t know where in the Midwest you are; I realize that it may not be an option.]

I consider myself blessed because my city of 70,000 inhabitants has over a dozen Indian restaurants (both North and South Indian styles, plus harder-to-find subculture cuisines such as Desi Chinese), but I realize that’s at the very high end of the “Indian Restauarants per Capita Index” for the US. I adore the stuff and hope you will as well!

Chicken Tikka Masala is probably a good starting point for you, although I personally prefer things quite a bit spicier myself. De gustibus non est disputandum.

And yes, I can recommend getting away from London on your next trip! Things are quite a bit cheaper outside the capital; there’s still tons to see and do, and never a long distance between attractions – at least by US standards. Several past SDMB threads on the subject, too…

Thanks, mate. You’re a good sport.

I have mixed feelings about missing this. If I had more time, I think it would be exctly the kind of thing I’d like to experience. Perhaps next time. Off to London this afternoon.

I made it through the work week without getting fired or deported, but I’m not out of the woods yet. There’s another Three Tuns around the corner, and I’ll be off in a bit. My new hotel is tres chic, not at all like the bland generic business hotel I stayed in while in Slough. I (happily) got a free upgrade to a better room, but it’s pretty small just the same. How small is it, you ask? So small I had to step out into the hall to get undressed. ;).
No drunken posting tonight. I promise (I’ve got my fingers crossed, just in case). I’ve got a whole weekend to while away in London. I still can’t believe how fortunate I am to have this opportunity.

Winston Smith, happy guy.

I would love to be taggin’ 'long with you man. Sounds like you are having a great time.

I’d be happy to have you along, Translucent Daydream, the only thing missing from thisa is a travelling companion (you’d be my second choice after my wife, though - no hard feelings).

I know that Indian food is supposed to be great in the UK but I’ve never been a huge fan of the cuisine. It’s a nice for a change now and then.

Do yourself a favour and scout out a recommended Chinese restaurant. I’ve never eaten chinese as good as when I was in England. And it wasn’t just one place - we spent two weeks and had chinese 4 times in four different restaurants in four different towns. It was fantastic each time. If you order just one dish, make it the de-boned pressed duck. You’ll thank me for the tip.

Enjoy the rest of your trip.

It’s bad Indian restaurants that are the best.

I was puzzled, especially since I also thought it had something to do with Orwell.

Authentic Indian cuisine isn’t necessarily about chilis, though. If it’s up to you how much goes in, just use enough heat so that it doesn’t drown out the underlying flavours.

What, the next time the Queen turns 80? or 160?
Antonius --I don’t know of any Indian restaurants around here–here is either Italian (which I hardly consider exotic) or Mexican (no freaking way and no apologies either–I hate ALL Mexican food–greasy, nasty stuff) or Chinese (I like Chinese…they only come up to your knees…sorry, I digress!). Indian must be on the north side (I am south of Chicago).

I also don’t like chili peppers or “heat”, so the Chicken Tikka sounds right up my alley.

Winny (I’m only calling you that because of another Winston I know about from UK–you may have heard of him, last name of Churchill-he went by Winny): hope the weather is fine. If you go to the V&A science museum, right across the street is a row of flats–that’s where we stayed! There are some very nice restaurants right near the V&A–don’t remember any names, but I had some excellent Italian food near the Tube. There’s a Thai place nearby as well, as well as a Chinese, complete with the ducks in the window…
I hope you have had a rocking good time and tell us all about it in the MMP.

I wasn’t going to do Chinese because we have a very well-established Chinatown section of Boston in which I’ve dined a bit. Perhaps I’ll reconsider, though. Yeah, duck is the BOMB, even when prepared without skill. I actually went up the street this evening towards what I thought was a Chinese resteraunt - turns out it was a Casino. I ended up having a lousy steak but overall an ok dinner finished by a Port and a plate of cookies (my custom desert :)). Turned out ok - I only lost 10 pounds.

I thought that only applied to Mexican food!

Indeed. I rarely post “in character”.

I’ve had Indian on many occassions in the states, but was looking for an “authentic” Indian meal to gain perspective and learn a little. I didn’t get anything much different that what I’m accustomed to, but got higher quality and a bit of “schooling”. I also learned that masala should NOT be spicy, though it is in many Places I’ve been to in the Boston area.

Hah! Yeah, I’ll 116 when she’s 160. Doesn’t seem like that much of a difference

<scratches head> So, you’re 58 now? (do I get a cookie if I solved it right?)
You MUST have some fish and chips–I insist. And put some vinegar on those chips, lad!

Nummers and then some…

D5?
