Another perk of this is that it’s one less thing you have to do before you hop into bed. That’s why I was really lacking in the flossing department. I’d wait until right before I went to bed and then when I was done brushing I was done totally. I just wanted to go to bed.
It’s been about three weeks that I’ve been brushing my teeth on one foot. It’s actually very challenging for me and a little painful.
The impact has been far greater than I ever imagined. The strength in my legs has improved considerably, my core strength has improved, and my back hurts less. I’ve always had mobility issues, particularly trouble getting things off low shelves. The other day I squatted to get something out of a cupboard. I just felt like I had the strength to do it.
I was shoveling wet, heavy snow today and my back held up better because of the balance exercises.
The trick is you have to give yourself rest days. I did overdo it and had to take a break due to foot and shin pain. So I switched to 30 seconds per foot until my muscles recover.
This is coming from a fat person who currently only exercises 1-2 times a week, so YMMV.
(Also I started doing tree pose while waiting for my tea to heat, so bonus balance exercises there.)
I tried it. It worked, at least for today. I sat up immediately. I still tried to rationalize myself back in bed, but I was able to stay up. I used that extra time to put on warm workout clothes, so as soon as my kid was ready I went out for a brisk walk. Could be a keystone habit, that one.
I tried the one-foot toothbrushing thing, based on this thread. I happy to say I can easily make it 2 minutes (my electric is timed to that like a lot of folks) on on foot without issue. I could probably make it 20 minutes, maybe. Is being able to balance on one-foot really such an extreme outlier? I don’t consider myself particularly well-balanced or coordinated.
As far as something I’ve done: Haven’t really thought about, but after reading about alarms I realized I haven’t used one in a few years and I think that has improved my life.
Damn. I’ve been at it for a few weeks and I still haven’t managed to make it 60 seconds on both feet during the same session. (I’ve made it a few times on my right foot.) My tree pose is doing a lot better, though.
So far the 1-2-3 wakeup method is working. This was day four of success, up at 6:30am as soon as the alarm went off, leaving me plenty of time to get into my winter walking clothes before starting my morning routine, which got me outside by 7:30am, so this is definitely a keystone habit for me.
One year I had sciatica pain so bad I had to have my husband help me stand up from the couch. (Once I was up, I could deal with it). I also did the one-two-three thing when alone, it really helped. Just DO it.
I can’t do it all with out grabbing on to something to balance me. I may have an inner ear balance problem. I tried to schedule an ENT to have a look at things, but they said they where overbooked and would call me back. They never did.
There is ONE ENT that visits the county. It’s ski country though. Break a bone? There are a dozen specialist for that.
