Pikers. Call me when the whole fandom gets ripped apart via threatened lawsuits (or failing that, rabid wolverines).
This thread makes me want to pop my collar.
Mixed martial arts fandom: 30,000 VFUs
Don’t get me wrong, I like MMA, but the meathead, Goldberg-tattooed toughguys who make up much of the fanbase is a real turnoff. And every asshole who wrestled in high school now has a focus for their continued post-graduate prickishness. News flash: buying Affliction or Tapout gear and taking a jiu-jitsu class 3 times a week doesn’t make you a cage fighter.
Were boxing fans ever this bad?
Well, in my imagination he is. I have my fingers crossed that it turns out to be true, though. I would so read the Misha Collins Outrageously Fake SPN News blog.
Oh, The Wire’s fandom must have a pretty high VFU rating.
Not content to discuss The Wire’s greatness only with other The Wire fans, we are compelled to interrupt the discussion of every other TV show to explain why The Wire is the greatest show ever, with an evangelical fervor equal to the Jehovah Witnesses. We believe that liking the show is a sign of our intellectual superiority. Being a fan of The Wire has replaced “I have black friends” as proof we’re not racists.
I dunno, I’d figure around 30 kVFU.
Doctor Who. Doctor Who. Doctor Who.
If there is something to fight over, they fight over it.
I thought this was a sexist thread title until realizing that Small Hen is female. (Duh!) Then I remembered the Legendary Ray Wars, waged between Due South fans. Specifically, between the overwhelmingly female slashers…
'Twas a bit before my time, but I’m New RayAll The Way!
Gundam Wing fandom was at least 20,000 VFU back in its heyday. I was afraid to admit that I was both a yaoi and a het fan, and once got reamed out on a mailing list for saying I liked one of the dub actors. No, I didn’t say I liked him more than the original seiyuu, I just said I liked him. And I was on the OZ side of the fandom! I wouldn’t have touched the Gboy side with a ten foot pole.
Ivalice fandom is very low on the scale, I’d say about 2,500. This is because it attracts the older, more educated fans. We enjoy our porn in peace.
I missed the prime of Tokyo Babylon/X fandom, which saddens me. I hear of past epic wanks, and wish I had the opportunity to participate in shipwars between Seishirou/Subaru and Kamui/Subaru.
I enjoy my video game/anime fandoms. Most of the wank comes from teenage girls, and it calms down a lot once they get past high school. I find western fandoms have a higher occurence of grown women wanking.
Pretty much any anime gets this when you hit the core of its fan base, the actual amount seems to be around some sort of parabola with popularity on the X axis, really popular and really obscure stuff is terrible and then the moderately popular stuff mellows out. And God help you if you get into dubbing vs subbing (and God help you if you take the middle ground and say some dubs can be good but tend not to do well, for instance).
On the other hand Abridged Series fanbases are possibly the nicest bunch of people I’ve ever witnessed, there’s some stuff here or there, but they’re generally pretty likable and funny.
I was about to give Naruto fans (of which I am one) at least a 22,000 VFU. These are the people who wear their Akatsuki costumes to school. The SasuNaru fangirls rate a bit higher, on account of all the Sakura-bashing and the mpreg-madness. As far as I’ve noticed, pretty much every fandom’s VFU increases when you factor in their respective slash fangirls, and this is no exception.
As for the Twilight fans, I remember reading on another forum something about how a boy disparaged Twilight in his science class and the enraged Twilight fangirl sitting near him threw acid in his face, sending him to the hospital.:mad:
As a fan of The Wire, I must sadly concur.
ETA: Also, as an Arrested Development fan, I’d say AD fandom would rate only slightly lower. But as somebody who’s never seen a full episode of Buffy, Whedon fans pretty much outdo us, though maybe it’s merely a case of sheer numbers.
Can I add, while I’m at it, that The Wire is indeed the best show evah?
Oh, indeed.
Only the dumb ones who thought Kimbo was good and Tapout is cool and wouldn’t know Shinya Aoki if he gogoplata’d them, and also wouldn’t know what a gogoplata is.
I’ll be the first to say something truly dangerous around here: Terry Pratchett fans. The problem is that he isn’t very funny, but to hear them talk you could never finish one of his books because you’d have to go to the ER to get sewn back up after each paragraph.
Heresy! Pistols at dawn, I say!
I’ve read 4 of his books*. Of the 4 books, I laughed maybe 3 or 4 times total, and I think they all came in Feet of Clay. Some of them are decent fantasy/light-reading/“vacation” books. They’re just not funny. When I hear someone say he’s funnier than Douglas Adams I’m literally baffled.
