My other choice would be the universe of Alex Benedict, interstellar antiquities dealer, and his assistant and pilot Chase Kolpath, written by Jack McDevitt. Life there seems pretty sweet, and no-one seems to be hurting for money, and they have interstellar FTL travel without relativistic consequences. I don’t know what I would study there but there are apparently thousands of inhabited planets, so lots to study.
This. All those planets to explore! I find the Monument Maker story arc fascinating, I’d love to study them and see what else can be learned.

In Iain M. Banks’ Culture universe? I think there is an endless field of study, considering just how far ahead they are supposed to be. And, by the way, no need for ticket back.
100 percent agree and yes I’d never make that call to come back either.
I second the trip to the 2001-verse.
Go to the airport, hop on a Pan-Am spaceliner to the wagon-wheel space station for a layover, and take a lunar shuttle to the moon and land at Clavius.
I’ll stay away from the Discovery…I hear the AI has some bugs to work out.
