Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry (the actors who were in that scene) are married in real life. They were on a talk show about two years after the Venus Butterfly episode aired. The said they were frequently asked to describe the Venus Butterfly. “It’s fiction, folks.” No explanation was ever made. I’m assuming the same thing for the 70’s show.

Today, if one googles Venus Butterfly, someone has come up with the assumption that it was oral, but no one has ever presented any evidence that it was anything other than a made-up sex act.

There’s a term of art for this in the entertainment industry, popularized by Alfred Hitchcock: a MacGuffin.
Hitchcock popularized the term in the late 1930s he described the MacGuffin concept thusly:
