Humor is tricky for automatons.
I wouldn’t call that the “OK” sign. That’s done with fingers up.
Woah woah woah… If any of you have been reading the Straight Dope as long as I have, you’d remember that our very own Unca Cecil wrote (albeit in 1986, but still):
“Other gestures are much more arbitrary. One of the most notorious of these is making a circle with thumb and forefinger, which to to Americans and most Europeans means “OK.” In Brazil, however, and some other places, it means something on the order of “screw you.” (The actual term is more pungent, you understand.) Cecil learned this to his sorrow on a little jaunt he made to Sao Paulo some years ago. I seldom make the OK gesture at home, but once I got down south and learned its obscene significance I felt a sudden compulsion to make it 20 or 30 times a day, thus antagonizing Brazilians by the thousands.”
Just because some of you have never heard of the “circle game” does NOT mean that everyone who plays it is a White Supremacist. In the most diverse workplace I’ve ever worked in, men of all colors played the circle game with each other all the time. It was the first, but not the last, time I would see this game, but surprisingly no one initiated me into the game, even though I’m a blonde haired, blue-eyed white guy—maybe it’s because I’m gay? It was a form of camaraderie, as several other posters have eluded to in this thread, and was/is totally benign. Essentially it’s a way of saying “made you look.”
Those of you getting your panties in a bunch that a couple of cadets “scored” by making this gesture on national television should stop for a moment and ask yourself why you aren’t assuming positive/benign intent. I’d wager these goofballs were sort of saying “hi” to their buddies watching the game on TV, because as soon as someone says “saw you on TV at the game,” they get to playfully punch their friend on the shoulder.
Wel, I am brownish, sorta-kinda or maybe white, but anyway, I dont know any racists. I know two-three trump supporters* and they dont like immigrants, (which could be racist but more likely xenophobic) as they arent racist for anything else. Course I live in CA, which likely makes a difference.
- all single issue gun voters.
Just because you have also heard of the circle game doesn’t mean there are no white supremacists.
Jesus Christ. We have a newspaper article reporting that white supremacists have adopted the OK sign as a group identifier. We have a report from a group that tracks hate crimes all day every day, saying that white supremacists have adopted the OK sign as a group identifier. We have actual, self-avowed, motherfucking white supremacists using the OK sign as an identifier. I’m curious what evidence would be sufficient to convince some of you all in this thread that white supremacists have adopted the OK sign as a group identifier. They were using it before the 4chan “hoax”. The 4chan “hoax” helped popularize it among white supremacists. Maybe Richard Spencer and Brenton Tarrant and Milo Yiannopolous and Jim Hoft all fell for the hoax too, but be that as it may, white supremacists are still using the OK sign as a group identifier
No one is “clutching their pearls” or “getting offended” or “getting their panties in a bunch”. Many of us are saying – quite fucking reasonably – that the OK gesture, in a couple of variations, is used by white supremacists as a group identifier, and maybe – just maybe – we shouldn’t shrug it off when young men in uniform use it on national TV. Yes, maybe they’re playing the circle game; maybe they’re signalling that the game they’re watching is A-OK; maybe they’re Brazilian and telling us all to fuck off. But I kinda want it to be checked out.
You know who else thinks it makes sense to investigate? The superintendents of the Army and Navy Academies and the Secretary of Defense. Cite, cite. I guess they’re SJWs or some shit too, right?
Sure, a few have, so what? Asshole racists are very gullible. Weak-minded too.
Your cite is by no means proof or even evidence that "They were using it before the 4chan “hoax”." You got two assholes flashing the Ok sign, so what? Like that isnt a super popular and common sign in the USA? Like we cant find hundreds of blacks and notable fighters of racial injustice who also used the OK sign? Look, sure, that asshole flashed the Ok sign- maybe, just maybe- he was signalling “OK”? I mean, since 4Chan admitted that they made the whole fucking thing up? It’s a HOAX, and you bought into it.
Yeah the navy and others are “investigating”. And they are doing so because a zillion wrong headed assholes tweeted and screamed and clutched pearls and have tried so very hard to get a few fun loving , non-racist cadets booted. Because- well, we were fooled by 4chan, so we are gonna ruin those cadets lives forever. Is that what you want? To ruin their lives? jeesusfuckkingkeeeRIST.
On February 13, 2017, Jim Hoft tweeteda picture of himself at the White House flashing an OK-type gesture. The tweet was accompanied by a Pepe the Frog emoji. Reports at the time indicated that the OK sign was being used by the alt-right as a type of Pepe the Frog symbol. Cite. Cite. Cite. Cite.
The 4chan “Operation O-KKK” was launched on February 27, 2017. Cite. February 27, you might notice, is after February 13.
The alt-right was using the Pepe/OK symbol. 4chan launched Operation O-KKK. The alt-right said, “Hey, that’s great!”. More alt-right assholes started using the OK symbol.
A “few” racists have used the symbol? Like the all the people in a racist march? Like two racist leaders? Like a guy who shot up a couple mosques? Like the Proud Boys? Like the Three Percenters? All of them use the OK sign to signify their white supremacist views.
When did I say I wanted to ruin anyone’s life? I said this is something that should be looked into. The one clutching pearls and getting offended here is you, getting so defensive that you can’t even admit that maybe this is worth looking into. You, who just can’t imagine that those nice young men at the football game might be white supremacists, and who thinks all us big mean liberals should just shut up.
The one falling for a hoax here is you, who are so blinded by the 4chan stupidity that you refuse to recognize that actual honest-to-god racists use the OK sign to identify themselves. The “hoax” is that this is all made up, all just something internet trolls have concocted to piss off liberals. The reality is that, once again, all together now, the OK gesture is used by white supremacists as a group identifier.
This whole thread has more gaslighting in it than a whole galaxy of supernova suns.
Yes. Doing silly stuff like the circle game is a bored junior troop thing not a racial thing IME.
In fact these young officers officers in training are behaving exactly the way their commander in chief wants them to behave.
The fish rots from the head.

I swear, did DrDeth invent the circle game or something? Because his vehement attacks on those who say it IS a racist symbol are so far out there as to boggle the mind.
Excuse me, I’m going to put a confederate flag on my truck (because I love those Dukes of Hazard!) and drive through black neighborhoods, so they too can learn the joy of leapin’ Chargers and Daisy Dukes. If they complain, they’re just whiny SJW libsnuts, amirite?
Make sure you’re wearing your MAGA hat! Which is always worn merely to show patriotic support for the President and never to antagonize people.
So, this guy’s messageis just “made you look”, right?
Did you look? If so, then he got you.
Can’t be parody, because it’s already been established that if you say “just joking” then it wasn’t satire or parody. And I said “joke”
So, no, you are wrong.
You should leave your little act here to the more clever posters.
ok
To be clear, I never associated it with “looking at a dick” or any type of homophobic type game. The rest of your summary of my thoughts, up to the word looking is accurate. It’s simply a “made you look” game, not a “made you look at my dick” game.
I’m not proud to admit that unfortunately the Army already has a “made you look at my dick game” and it involves exposing one’s genitals (usually a scrotum) through a newly acquired rip or hole in the crotch, and asking a buddy “Hey, is this hole noticeable?” or “I think I sat in bubble gum, is there any on my pants?” or something juvenile like that.
Back to the circle game, it’s just about the “got you!” factor. There’s not even any punching involved anymore. It’s actually quite pointless, but also inexplicably quite popular.
Gaslighting noted.
