What should I buy at the grocery store?

Alright, I’m working on getting a list together to go grocery shopping with. Give me some input! I’ve got a good bit of fruit and veggies down already, what else?

Toilet paper. And pick up a 12-pack of Scott for me, as I forgot it last night.

Popcorn. You can never have enough popcorn.

Hm. I was going to say popcorn.

How about cheese?

And I was going to say cheese.

That’s two votes for cheese, ImprovGeek,

Five pounds of childhood innocence
A gallon of youthful idealism

Wait, wait. This would all seem to imply that most people are not as, well, anal about grocery lists as I am. Here’s how I decide what to get at the grocery store: First I clip the coupons from the Sunday paper, and look at my market’s sale circular for the week. These bargains, combined with what we already have on hand, determines my weely meal plan. Then, I write out menus for every night of the upcoming week. Working from this menu, I determine what I need that I don’t already have. Once I’ve got all my dinner stuff listed, I think about what we’ll need for breakfasts, lunches and snacks, too. In fact, the breakfast stuff (cereal, mostly) and snack stuff is mostly inspired by coupons. Or, if I’m really lucky, coupons combined with what’s on sale that week.

If this seems like a lot of planning, let me explain myself: my mother had five kids, went to the grocery store three or four times a week, and always bought whatever looked good. Then, about 5PM every evening, she’d have a hissy fit because she didn’t know what to fix for dinner, and didn’t have anything thawed. So, all this trouble is just my little part in the effort to “not be like my mother!”

Of course, I don’t know just how I’d do it if I didn’t have a family.

Ham, Swiss cheese, and rye bread. Oh, and bacon. You can never have too much bacon.

How about some pie?
Ooh - and some ice cream.

I’m out of crackers, so

Vinta crackers, multigrain wheat whins (they need to be multigrain), I need some apples too, to make pie and a few bananas. Oh, and some half and half for the rice pudding tomorrow night.

I’m good for everything else. Thanks!

norinew we do that too. We don’t always plan our meals for the week, but try to think a day or two ahead at least and I have frozen leftovers tucked in the freezer for the nights we don’t plan for and can’t decide (or no time to cook). Just take out and warm up.
