What should I do in LA?

I have a really long layover in LA on tuesday. I’ve never been there. I don’t want to spend a lot of money, so what can I do that’s not horribly far away from the airport, and not terribly expensive? Oh yeah, I’m female, by myself, and not into sports, so exclude sports related things and places it would be unwise to venture alone.

I’m going to bed, I’ll check this tomorrow, thanks in advance for any ideas!

Venice Beach is very close to LAX and you only have to pay for parking. You can shop the booths and watch the weirdos. See how many of them you can see that you’ve seen on tv a million times, like the rollerskating guitarist.

I can never remember his name. I have one of his postcards around here somewhere that he gave me.

LissyLou: Two miles up the beach from Venice is Santa Monica. (Parking in Santa Monica is about $5 or so, depending on where you park.) Try some fish’n’ships at Ye Olde King’s Head, then walk around the 3rd St. Promenade. If you’re there at night, look for Psychic Cat. (It’s a busker with a couple of moggies that pick up a ‘furtune’ and give it to you. Cute act.)

Another Psychic Cat Photo. It’s from this page, which has a couple of other photos from Venice Beach.

I saw that psychic cat guy two nights ago! Didn’t pay for the act, though…

If you’re into art, the Getty Center isn’t too far from the airport (less than fifteen miles…well, LA miles at least) and all you have to pay for is parking.

How about the La Brea Tarpits , if you have any interest at all in fossils. IMO the only thing worth seeing in LA

If you don’t want to rent a car, you could take the Metro (the subway thing) to get around. After you get out of baggage claim, go out to ground transportation and look for the blue signs (airport bus dropoffs). One of the will be labelled G for Green Line, and, for free, it will take you to the Aviation Station on the Metro Green Line. Metro tix are really cheap, like $1.25? I forget. Anyway, the Green Line goes to Redondo Beach. You could also take the Blue Line to Long Beach. That’s pretty cool (big ships plus the Queen Mary is there). For more about the Metro and places to see, go here: LA Metro (bus and rail) Website.

Have fun!
