I’ve been in DC for just coming up for two weeks now. Last weekend I went to the National Air and Space Museum and the National Archive on Saturday, and then a co-worker’s house for a party on the Sunday. This weekend is my last in DC. So, DC Dopers, what shouldn’t I miss this weekend? I was thinking of going to the National Gallery of Art and/or one of the Smithsonians this weekend, a good plan, or are there other things I shouldn’t miss whilst I’m here?
I always enjoy the Museum of American History. I like the National Gallery of Art, too, but no one else in my family does, so I haven’t been there in eons.
Have you been to the VietNam Memorial? It’s quite moving, I think.
I hadn’t, no. I may well go over this weekend.
My main collaborator at NRL has been working me hard enough that all I’ve really had chance to do when I get back to my hotel is eat a light meal, and then sleep. I think he’s enjoyed it.
I assume you’ve already done the monuments thing.
I’d recommend a visit to the International Spy Museum. It’s great fun. The weather looks like it’s going to suck this weekend, so you’re probably going to be SOL on anything outdoors.
One of my favorite walks is to get off the Metro at Rosslyn and walk over to the Teddy Roosevelt Memorial (it’s easily the best memorial, IMO, and nobody ever goes there), then walk over Key Bridge, take a look at the Exorcist steps (and climb them if you want), then wander up and down M Street in Georgetown for a while. If the weather’s nice, you can wander down to Thompson’s and rent a kayak for a little excursion up the Potomac. If that’s your thing.
Go visit the Tenley Library on Wisconsin Avenue. That’s where I got my first library card!
(I tell everyone this - don’t take it personally)
Yep. Did that last weekend.
Sounds great. Where is it?
Yep, had noticed that. It was cold and miserable yesterday. I thought it was DC’s way of making sure I wasn’t homesick.
The walk sounds good. The kayaking, not so much – far too active.
I don’t know if they have started the Concerts on The Canal yet this year, but it’s free. It’s on the banks of the canal in Georgetown. Or take one of the canal tours on one of the riverboats. You might try getting tickets for a Wolf Trap performance.
You should have let us know so we could set up a Dopefest to meet you. Will you be around long enough for us to set up a get-together so some of us can meet you before you leave? Please let us know.
Unfortunately, I leave on Monday night, and am spending Monday at the Lab. I’m around and free tomorrow. I didn’t want to organise anything in advance, as I didn’t know what the plan would be when I got here, and whether I’d be working the weekends or not. However, I would love to meet up with people, either tonight or tomorrow.
Are you online right at the moment? Do you want to go to a Doper get-together today. There’s one that starts in an hour and a half.
Sounds like a plan to me. Where?
F and 8th. Best thing is to get off at the Gallery Pl - Chinatown stop on the Red/Green/Yellow lines. Plus from there it’s a short walk to Ford’s Theatre. They usually have a little tour/lecture thing going on about every hour where they give a quick recounting of Lincoln’s assassination. Short walk down to the Mall from there, too.
