I’ve Googled several different Android boards, but none of the solutions they offer have worked, so if Dopers have any ideas I’d be grateful.
I’ve got an HTC Hero Android phone, and in the past month or two it’s been unable to complete any downloads at all from the Android marketplace; every time I press “Install” it almost immediately pops up with “Download unsuccessful.” I’ve tried deleting files to make more memory as well as clearing various caches and installations for Market but all to naught.
As a last desperate move I’m considering formatting my SD card. I’ve already backed up my personal files from the card, but I’m not sure if I need to do anything else to ensure that my current applications aren’t messed up are deleted (since I won’t be able to reinstall them if this doesn’t work) or indeed whether I’m putting my phone itself at risk. Any ideas?
You should be able to verify that your applications are using the onboard memory rather than the SD card. You can manage the storage options for each application and move any that are using the memory card. Once you do that you should be fine to reformat.
Appreciate that! The good news is formatting the SD card went smoothly, but the bad news is it did nothing at all to fix my problem with the Android Market. Oh, well.
Your problem is the ROM memory is full, NOT the SD Card. You need to clear the ROM memory before you do anything else. Go into your settings, find the application manager and delete all cache memory. Then delete around 10 or 12 Apps. This should clear enough memory to install an App called “move Apps” Then move your apps to the SD Card.
Good Luck.

This works on my phone, give it a try on yours.
A simple way to free up storage space is by deleting all the log files in the device memory. Just dial *#9900# on your phone and select option 2 “Delete dumpstate/logcat” in the prompted menu. It’s not necessary to root your phone either. That’s it!
I think the main problem is you’re using a 4+ year old phone. I imagine it’s still on Android 2.2, unless you have a custom ROM on there, which I’m assuming you don’t. Quite frankly, I’m amazed you can even access the Google Play store.
In fact, that may be the issue. It’s entirely possible that an update to the Play Store, or Google Play Services, or something has made it so a device as old as yours can no longer properly use it.
Is there a reason you haven’t upgraded? Most major carriers (in the US, at least) tend to offer last year’s flagship phones at $0-50 down.
If you’re on a pre-paid account, then you can get an older phone for $50-$100, or even a brand-new off-contract phone like a Nexus 5 or Moto X for less than $400 (the Moto-X frequently goes on sale for less than $300, even.)
The Motorola G is an even more budget-friendly version of the Moto X that retails for less than $200. It has less powerful specs, but since it runs “vanilla” Android with no bloat-ware from the manufacture or carrier, it actually runs really well, nearly as good as the “flagship” phones like the Galaxy series.
