Android phone didn't download app but now is full?

I have an LG Optimus V. Today I downloaded Words with Friends because that’s what my friend said she was playing. I got it. It’s not what she has. So I downloaded Scramble with Friends. I was concerned that I might run out of space, so I ditched a few apps I wasn’t using while that one downloaded. I got rid of more MB than I was downloading.
I checked every couple of minutes to see if the download was done. The last time I looked, there was no sign of the download in progress, and no messages about it. I checked the app list and it wasn’t there. I have had once before where something loaded partially then ran out of room and ditched, so I deleted a couple more apps and all texts and started over. Same thing happened, except now I have the low space warning and apparently texts are bouncing.
I figured it might be a temporary weirdness and turned the phone off and removed the battery for a minute, then restarted. Still the low memory warning, still no Scramble.
What happened to the download, and where is the new app? If the new app is not on my phone, why do I have low memory when I didn’t before?
I thought that I might just not have noticed the memory being full after I got Words but before Scramble, so I deleted Words. Memory is still full. So something is wrong.

What version of Android are you running? If it is 2.2 or later you may be able to recover some space by off-loading some apps to your SD card. Go to Settings->Applications->Manage Applications[sup]*[/sup]. You should see a list of downloaded apps, which you should be able to sort on size via the menu. Select one of these and you should see details for that app. If it has a “Move to SD card” option press it. Note that not all apps have this option so it will be grayed out. Downsides? you can’t you apps on your SD card whilst you have it connected to a PC and are accessing it like a USB drive.

[sup]*[/sup]based on my Android2.2 device - exact details may vary with other versions.

LG probably made the /data/data partition too small.

(this is about an HTC phone, but could be the same situation for LG.)
