‘Larger picture’ seems to mean “a lot of vague pronouncements unrelated to the subject at hand.” This story is about a few people being jerks. That’s really all there is to it. I think you are probably just benting some of your own problems with the state of affairs in this country today, or trying to deal with some feelings of guilt.
Look, I know our culture is basically fueled by outrage at this point. I think that’s terrible. I get annoyed when people in the Pit talk about “recreational outrage,” but outrage IS recreation. But talking about Gates scholarships in the context of Imus? If I were a betting man, I’d say you feel like someone is calling you a racist and you’re trying to defend yourself. Or you think someone is trying to oppress you. That’s not my problem, but it also has nothing to do with Don Imus and Bernard McGuirk.
When I wrote that it never occured to me that it could/would be taken that way. I said it because I was afraid that if I again used the word “Liberals” I’d have people swarming on me (as they have been doing) and so I thought I’d tone it down a bit that way.
For what it’s worth, my favorite person in the whole world (at least as far as men are concerned) is Dr. Michael Savage of the ‘Savage Nation’ radio show. (It’s a program syndicated on something like 400 stations nationally, on three hour per day five days a week.)
Dr. Savage is one of the most brilliant people on the planet! And no one is as fearless as him!!
That is your “proof”? That Whites are consistently being shafted? Boy.
Like by the fact that predominately White schools spend $908 more per student than do predominately Black schools even within the same districts? Like by the fact that Blacks generally have poorer access to healthcare? And so on and on …
Now I can accept a debate on how much of this is historical baggage, how much is socioeconomic class effect that correlates with race rather than race itself, how much is a result of cultural factors within the urban poor Black subculture … but to take the position that these figures are consistent with a thesis of Whites being obsequious and getting the shaft is bizzare ranting.
All the rest of them, right? (Well, except for schools founded within the last few decades when racial integration was more common.)
But I’m not getting what “historically black” schools have to do with this discussion. The closest thing I can see in the post you quoted was “predominantly black schools”, which doesn’t mean the same thing as “historically black schools”.
You might think differently if people like you-know-who (Koppel) had been man enough to speak honestly and bluntly for three decades during all those many times he had people like Louis Farakhan on his show. But then maybe you don’t get the point there either, I don’t know.
But it’s okay, you have many on your side … so you must be right.
But as far as I’m concerned, there’s really no excuse for people living truly impoverished lives in this country anymore. Everyone can make something of themselves if they want to. But as long as some people think that kicking out babies left and right (regardless of their race!) is the way to go, then those folks and their unfortunate offspring will have to settle for what crumbs they get, it’s NOT my fault.

Yes. Almost as funny as pretending that this is some big formal debate and demanding that things be “cited” for credibility whilst there haven’t even been any set guidelines agreed upon.
I am still confused about this guy Imus. He has been on radio for 30 years. Many years of being a shock-jock. Surely he knows by now what he can get away with and what he cannot. Surely he must have years of being able to self -censor.
So, was this the first time he came out with such comments?
I don’t follow the guy, but I think he’s around 72 and so his brain might be decaying. Bob Barker is also around that age and he makes lots of mistakes everyday, God bless him.
