That’s not a description of what a historically white college is.
Historically black colleges are remnants of seggregation. They exist today with a blind eye to segregation and many of them are funded with tax dollars. What you described as a predominately white school does not exist. There are no schools that expressly cater to white students. It’s illegal. It IS legal to discriminate in admissions ratio’s to benefit minority students who cannot compete scholastically (does not apply to sports).
What it has to do with the discussion is that DSeid was lamenting about dollar to student ratios. I’m simply pointing out that states fund schools that cater to black students above and beyond the general populace and then discriminate against white students in the schools that don’t.
I think you’re still mixing up “predominantly” and “historically”. A “predominantly black school” or a “predominantly white school” just means a school (usually primary or secondary) that currently happens to have a significant majority of black or white students, respectively. The racial makeup of the school depends solely on the local racial demographics at a given time.
A “historically black school”, on the other hand, as you note, is a school (usually a college) originally founded specifically for black students during the time when most schools and colleges were officially segregated, and which continues to have a high proportion of black students.
Close, but not quite. Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) were founded between 1864 and the early 20th century, some privately supported by churches, others state-funded, for the education of African Americans. Because, of course, other colleges (which can be described as historically or traditionally White, believe it or not) did not admit African Americans. (Notable exceptions in the private sector include Oberlin College and Harvard). In fact, in the South, most state colleges had legal barriers to African Americans attending. This was only challenged in the 1940s and the 1950s (Universities of Oklahoma and Texas, for example).
Black colleges have never discriminated by race. In fact, most HBCUs have diverse (though mostly predominantly White) faculties, and most had founding presidents who were White, and only recently have had Black presidents. Some have White presidents. And there are some HBCUs that actually have a majority of White students.
Black colleges became increasingly popular among Whites with GI Bill benefits who lived in communities with few other options. They also tended to be open-enrollment institutions (no minimum test score needed) so it was easy to enroll. Last, remediation and night courses were generally innovated at HBCUs, so if you struggled in school or worked full time you could attend. (The governor of Louisiana attended Southern University’s law school in the late 90s because LSU would not admit him as a part-time student.)
Yes. Maybe I don’t understand your question but we have both public and private colleges in my area which cater to black students. Their ratio’s would not be tolerated if reversed.
I’m done with my taxes and it’s Friday night so I’ll leave you to your moderating duties. Enjoy.
“Not tolerated”? By whom? Are you claiming that it’s automatically some kind of infraction if a college’s percentage of white students is above a certain level?
GuyNblueJeans, if you have nothing more than personal beliefs, then say so and note that you cannot support those claims with evidence. Lying about sources is considered a BAD THING in this Forum and it will not be tolerated.
As to your claims that posters have been “swarming” on you, I will note that nothing of the sort has occurred. You made several rather odd claims and posters have asked you to support thoseclaims with evidence. In reply, you have posted a series of "LOL"s in the manner of a teenage chat room and have posted deliberately false claims about specific episodes of Nightline. No one has “swarmed” you, (although Czarcasm has expressed himself a bit testily, prompted, no doubt, by your dishonesty).
If you cannot support your claims with evidence, just admit it or look for a different way to express your views that can be supported. If you continue to liew, you will not be permitted to continue posting.
that’s not an argument. If a university catered to a white racial demographic it would be a media freakshow of protest. It’s not even a debate. You’re trying to assign absolutes as a disclaimer for the practice.
Your link is about private scholarships. That’s on par with with United Negro Fund and as such not relevant to the discussion. There is no way a college could cater to a white student body in the United States and not have it blow up in their face. You’re just going to have to resign yourself to the fact that this type of discrimination is accepted during this period in history. Call it payback for past indescretions but the Supreme Court has signed on to it. It’s not one of their better decisions because it’s vague on how it’s executed.
Well actually this is Great Debates. I’m not a mod, and don’t care enough to link on the rules, but those who post and read here actually do care about whether or not the information they read is true or just the verbal diarrhea of some asshole. People who make up shit often find themselves getting flushed out. Heck, that’s true in the Pit too but the refrain of “Cite Please” is going to be heard in GD fairly often, and the inability to provide it when requested will be uniformly met with contempt.
