The Royals were not named in honor of a Negro League team. You’re probably thinking of the Montreal Royals, for whom Jeckie Robinson played before he came up to the Brooklyn Dodgers, but that team was International League - regular, white-race, minor league.
And they weren’t named in honor of that team either - they were named for the American Royal, a livestock show that takes place annually in Kansas City.
I’m surprised no one here suggested the DC PAC-Men. That’s a pretty brilliant entry in ESPN’s design the Expos’ new uniform context.
