Gee Ziggy, Let me give you a big fucking clue here. The guy for all his faults is the commander in chief. As the commander he has the option of making statements to address the moral of the troops. Now which of these statements do you think would work best -
1 - Gee I Hope they don’t hurt us
2 - Bring it on
You can slam him for making bad decisions but its obvious that he was trying to demonstrate the confidence and bravado of the members of the armed forces and possibly send a message to the peaceful civilians of Iraq that the US is not giving up. I myself think it was bad timing and insensitive, but maybe if I was trying to survive in that shithole we all know as Iraq I might just be comforted by those words. Call it stupid but it wasn’t baiting and it wasn’t wishing for casualties either.
And God help the troops who have this doofus for Commander in Chief. If I want to make a morale-boosting, chest-thumping statement for the consumption of both my troops and any potential insurgents, it’s going to be more along the lines of:
Anybody who’s getting any ideas better watch your step. We’re not in the mood.
It conveys the message of: “We’re badass enough to take you down” without extending anything like an invitation to anyone.
Honestly, the man was being stupid, and it’s precisely because he was baiting.
I am extending him the presumption that he was not wishing for casualties.
He could have done Option 3, which is to stroke his cheek, and mumble in a scratchy voice “What have we done to deserve such disrespect?” Then he would just have Bin Laden whacked by Joey and Sal, and…
