Not that I believe that a wife (or girlfriend) is a bad thing, but I do relish the liberties I have in between girlfriends.
Sidenote: Tom Waits was decidedly better off with a wife. Once he met wife-to-be and artistic collaborator Kathleen Brennan, his work entered an adventurous new phase that critics generally praise.
From Dave Matthews Band… “Crush”
because I’m still amazed after 8 1/2 years together and 3 years of marriage how much I’m still in love with and adore Mr. Winnie
It’s crazy I’m thinking
Just as long as you’re around
And here I’ll be dancing on the ground
Am I right side up or upside down
To each other we’ll be facing
By love we’ll beat back the pain we’ve found
You know
I mean to tell you all the things I’ve been thinking deep inside
My friend
With each moment the more I love you
So much you have given love
That I would give you back
Again and again
Meaning I’ll hold you
And please
Let me always
Judy Collins’ recording is better known, but the song was written by Joni Mitchell, who also sings it on her Ladies of the Canyon album.
My song? Hard to pick just one, but let’s go with this one:
Some Kind Of Beautiful (Nikka Costa)
Like the day looks forward to the rising sun
Like the sun that everyday kiss the tide
Like the bridges that leads you to the other side
I’m everyday thankful that you’re the one
If you chased me baby I’d be still as stone
Cause babe you bring my smile on like no other
There ain’t no deeper feeling I get nowhere than
When I’m the skin beneath your hands
I’ll say goodbye to love
No one ever cared
If I should live or die
Time and time again
The chance for love
Has passed me by
And all I know of love
Is how to live without it
I just can’t seem to find it
So I’ve made my mind up
I must live my life alone,
And though it’s not the easy way
I guess I’ve always known
Well, with regards to the divorce, it alternates between “Sleep To Dream”, by Fiona Apple (for those bitter moods), and “Torn”, as sung by Natalie Imbruglia (and yes, I know she didn’t do it first), for those melancholy moods. Oh, and “Loneliness Is Worse”, by Veruca Salt, for those near-suicidal moods.
In terms of my romantic situation post-divorce, the best I can come up with is “Only Happy When It Rains”, by Garbage.
Love is lightning, love is ice
It only strikes the lucky twice
Once, so you will know the price
And once for crazy faith
You’re not asking if I love this man
I know you don’t, you don’t believe you can
Yet I’ve seen love open like a dancer’s fan
It’s crazy I know,
But my faith says so
You are the bearer of unconditional things
You held your breath and the door for me
Thanks for your patience
You’re the best listener that I’ve ever met
You’re my best friend
Best friend with benefits
