After Payne Stewart (the golfer) died in a plane crash, the morning the next tournament began they held a memorial for him. Very early in the morning, foggy, dew on the grass. The tv was showing a long shot down a fairway, and you barely started to hear bagpipes, then recognized Amazing Grace, then the guy playing appeared out of the fog. I tear up every time I think about it.

I.O.U. , by Jimmy “Pork Showsage” Dean.
Winter - Tori Amos
Makes me think of my dad, of course, and how I haven’t really lived up to his hopes.
The Dreaming Tree - Dave Matthews Band
Just a general tearjerker for me.
Fix You - Coldplay
One of my sister’s favorite bands, and also who I think of when I hear it. She’s making so many mistakes right now…

Unrequited love. Who hasn’t been there?
Pushit - Tool
I have been locked and barricaded in a room by a man who was obsessively in love with me, and on drugs. That’s a scary thing to have happen to you, and it sticks with ya.
♪I am somewhere I don’t wanna be.
Push me somewhere I don’t wanna be.
Put me somewhere I don’t wanna be.
Seeing someplace I don’t wanna see.
Never wanna see that place again.
Saw that gap again today
While you were begging me to stay.
Managed to push myself away,
And you, as well, my dear.
If when I say I may fade like a sigh if I stay,
You minimize my movement anyway,
One must persuade you another way.
Pushin’, shovin’, pushin’, shovin, pushin me
There’s no love in fear.
Staring down the hole again.
Hands upon my back again.
Survival is my only friend.
Terrified of what may come.
Remember I will always love you,
As I tear your fucking throat away.
It will end no other way,
It will end no other way.♪

And I’ve just realized I am partially repeating myself .

Her name is now Issa. She broke her contract with her record company, sold all her possessions and hit the road. She decided to get rid of pretty much everything but her clothing - even her instruments, I believe, have to be provided by her venues. As part of this, she decided to stop charging a set fee for her music - it’s all available at her website, through downloads, with a suggested price, but you can pay whatever you like, or nothing at all. Her intent is to let her fans support her directly and pay her what they think she’s worth.
Her record label, of course, wasn’t exactly on board with this decision. So the stuff they own the rights to is no longer “hers” and she can’t play it in concert anymore.

OK. That’s…kooky, but kinda cool. Thanks.

And another one that I don’t know the name of and have only heard once. It was in a movie or TV show, over a burial scene or a person-looking-at-a-grave scene. My husband at the time said it was Peter Gabriel, but now neither of us remember the song or the exact context. I think it might have been something in the Whedonverse, but that could be a red herring. Whatever it was, the song itself, not the context, had me sobbing and gasping for breath. Any ideas?
This got me curious. I haven’t seen it, but was it “I Grieve” in Smallville at Clark’s dad’s funeral?

Ooooh…that might be it.

Kleenex, Kleenex
Yep. I think I associated it with “Whedonverse” not because it’s a genre show, but because the song itself captures the same tone as “The Body” episode of Buffy - the “Wait - why is life going on like nothing happened?” numb slow-motion despair of grief.
Thank you for helping me work this out. I appreciate it.
Hey, no prob. Most dopers like to practice their Google-fu if they find the topic interesting.
Keep Me in Your Heart by Warren Zevon
“If I leave you for a while, it doesn’t mean I love you any less…”
“Sometimes when you’re doing simple things around the house, maybe you’ll think of me for a while”
It was written as Zevon was dying. It breaks me up every time.

I just heard Emmylou Harris singing Joni Mitchell’s Magdalene Laundries and I have to add it to my list.
I was an unmarried girl
I’d just turned twenty-seven
When they sent me to the sisters
For the way men looked at me
Branded as a jezebel
I knew I was not bound for heaven
I’d be cast in shame
Into the Magdalene laundries
Most girls come here pregnant
Some by their own fathers
Bridget got that belly
By her parish priest
We’re trying to get things white as snow
All of us woe-begotten daughters
In the streaming stains
Of the Magdalene laundries
Prostitutes and destitutes
And temptresses like me
Fallen women
Sentenced into dreamless drudgery
Why do they call this heartless place
Our Lady of Charity?
Sweet charity…
These bloodless brides of Jesus
If they had just once glimpsed their Groom
Then they’d know, and they’d drop the stones
Concealed behind their rosaries
They wilt the grass they walk upon
They leech the light out of a room
They’d like to drive us down the drain
At the Magdalene laundries
Peg O’Connell died today
She was a cheeky girl, a flirt
They just stuffed her in a hole
Surely to god you’d think at least some bells should ring
One day I’m going to die here too
And they’ll plant me in the dirt
Like some lame bulb
That never blooms come any spring
Oh, come any spring
No, not any spring
Not any spring
