It’s not surprising to me when people think being woke only applies to the latest cause celebre. After all, they’ve been raised to forget everything they learn at the end of the semester.
You’re right, and I don’t mean to contradict or minimize what you say. But, something I’ve noticed, from many years of teaching math:
Once in a while, I get the feeling, “I’ve explained this over and over and over again! Why don’t you get it by now??” And I have to remind myself that, yes, I’ve explained it many times over the years, but these particular students may never have heard it before.
Admittedly, this isn’t really the same. But if you have to explain the same shit a thousand times, it’s possible that on that thousandth time you’ll be reaching someone who hasn’t heard it before.
I once called someone out on using the racist term “ricer” to describe a car. He immediately slammed back, saying it wasn’t a racist term, it was an acronym (actually initialism). I forget what he said the letters stood for.
I apologized, but later looked it up and saw he was full of shit.
Soo, whats your opinion of Ice Cube? Are you tolerating his racism?
What are you basing this accusation on? I don’t see anything in the post you’re replying to.
Does it effect your “benefit of the doubt” at all to know that JakeRS is a late teens/early 20s Serbian posting from Serbia with a native language of Serbocroatian? And is using the term for modified cars that is found all over the English internet?
His use of the blanket statement white people comes off as racist to me. And his accusatory use of the word racist as if only white people are racist. Racism is a human being problem. Finger pointing at entire groups will never work. Specific examples directed at individuals is a far more effective tactic and make deflection much harder.
How many black folk are calling out Louis Farrakhan for being an anti-Semite? Or calling out hip-hop culture for its happy misogyny?
The point is, once again, we all have a lot to do to make the world a better place.
Maybe not racist, but it struck me as kind of… lumping all “white people” together. Like, “We’ve told white people this, therefore white people should know this.”
You wouldn’t have the definition or etymology in the wild. Imagine this scenario with cars: You are walking out of a grocery store. A Subaru sedan with a rear spoiler pulls into the lot and parks next to an occupied Subaru SUV. Windows roll down. “You riced-out your car,” exclaims the SUV driver. The sedan driver responds, “Yeah, bro, it’s sick!” Would you infer something racist about that?
…
I probably did overreact. But arent these blanket statements what we are supposed to be fighting against? Even kinda positive ones like Why are Asians such great students?
I’d probably infer that I mis-heard something. But yeah, if I figured out what it meant at all, I would guess it to be racist. Because “rice” is like the epitome of “plain”. It’s one of the most boring, unshiny foods out there. It’s my staple starch, in as much as I have a staple, and I like it. But it’s boring, white, ordinary.
So if it means something that can’t possibly be derived directly from “rice”, like “glitzy”, then what could the connection possibly be? Rice-eaters! Ummm. Ewww.
Yeah, it sounds bad to me.
I think there’s a middle ground between just tolerating it and screaming “KKK!” at someone. You know the whole, “ignorance rather than malice” kind of thing?
(And now I’m jonesing for some fried rice)
Not racist, just Ricist.
Ahh, has Cartooniverse found the caffeinated coffee again?
CMC
No doubt there’s work yet to do, but Cartooniverse leading any sort of charge is on par with having the Boy who Cried Wolf make emergency announcements.
Um, you did. Your very first post in the thread. You chastised the OP for bringing up the KKK, saying it’s not nice and wouldn’t convince anyone.
I don’t think that’s what the OP is trying to do. They’re venting. There’s a lot of racist shit coming to light right now, and then to see bullshit?
And that’s not counting the frustration the board move has caused, or the frustration/anxiety of pandemic life.
I see the Indian name thread has been closed (albeit without mod comment). I went ahead and reported the main thread for a title change.
(Note: please don’t everyone report the thread. Discourse handles this sort of thing differently. Too many reports might do something to the thread. I know it can cause posts to be hidden.)
I’d like it if it melted the font, causing the words to run down the infinitely long page.
Yes, using the term “ricer” is definitely on the level with lynching blacks and putting burning crosses on their lawns.
Sigh.
1). No, we do not have to wait until every worst-case expression of a problem has been fixed before we complain about less drastic examples of the problem.
2). No, it does not work better to keep cheerfully encouraging everything right up to some line of extreme drasticness, and then assume that nobody’s going to step over that line.
3). The accumulated hassle, in anybody’s life, of a whole lot of little tiny cuts can do a great deal of damage, even if they manage to escape getting bleed-out-immediately level wounds.
