What the fuck is wrong with Mexico?

No doubt that is why there is such a flood of illegal immigrants from the US to Mexico. You guys really should build a fence.

Quick question, why was prohibition repealed?

That’s rubbish equivalent to the Mein Kampf, Chick tracts, and Protocals of the Elders of Zion combined. Drug use in the US has declined massively and violence in general is down too.

Er…I’m American too, and I’ve known lots of other Americans who have cowered and showed no courage, wether it be in personal behavior, ideals, intellectual bent, etc. Kinda a ridiculous statement. You can be patriotic and realistic at the same time.

Oh, and as far as legalization goes, there was a proposed study that was going to be conducted by John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore…on the idea of heroin maintence for addicts. It never got off the ground, but it’s interested to speculate how such a program (which was tried in Switzerland to not great success) might have flown here. Heroin is certainly less problematic than methadone.

You are welcome to your opinion; I still fail to see what Japan has to do with the discussion. Incidentally, I’m an American and I’ve visited Japan and Mexico. I prefer Mexico. Before the recent unpleasantness, I was seriously considering Mexico as a place to retire. I’m a little too fearful for my life to do so now.

Well, I should hope not. But until that does happen, how about trying to post something that is not quite as ridiculous as the post you are quoting concerning the silence and complacency of the Mexican citizenry. I believe this most recent murder occurred precisely because at least one member of the Mexican citizenry was NOT silent or complacent.
And would you take to the streets, armed and dangerous, or would you hope the police would solve your problems?

Cite, please?

It’s true, according to figures I’ve seen that violent crimes are down somewhat although with the current economic downturn I suspect we’ll see them rise again once the figures are in. I have seen nothing to indicate that overall drug use has diminished. I remain unconvinced that there is much corellation between drug use and violence in this country anyway.
SS

Mein Kampf is an actual book whose author has been verified. Chick Tracts fall into the same category. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion are forgeries and have been proven to be so many times over. Which one of the three doesn’t belong in this group? And what is your point in throwing these titles out here?

When did drug use in the US decline? I missed that announcement but I’m always ready to learn.

I think that is what happened in Brazil. Secret squads of off duty police officers started doing assassinations.

Supposedly the more dangerous and under threat your world and life is, the more authoritarian you become (hence authoritarian communism & fascism after WW1, the pandemic flu and great depression all within a 20 year period). I’m pretty liberal, but if the extra-judicial death squads were actually targeting the serious criminals, then I’d be cheering them on if I lived there.

I don’t think Mexico needs Fascism, I think it (along with most of central america) needs to be made into a couple US states.

The drugs and the guns are part of the problem, but IMHO the “Culture of bribery” is the big one. Here in the US bribery could land some of the biggest public officials out there in prison. Even then its usually for favorable treatment, incentives to place economic boosts in certain areas, etc. Not the “take the money, or I kill you” variety that seems so endemic.

Why did you use the murder rate in Los Angeles to make your point instead of New Orleans, which according to the second link you provide is the 4th most dangerous city in the world? 85 murders per 100,000 in a city in the USA. I’m dying to hear the excuses for this little jewel. Can’t be blamed on drug cartels, civil unrest or other extraordinary circumstances. That is far more than Guadalajara where I live.

Here’s more on “Ponchi”, 14-year-old assassin for a Mexican cartel.

Preying on young teens in small towns where cartels already operate seems to be picking up. This doesn’t seem different to me than most types of inner city gang recruitment.

Here’s the full article: Mexican drug cartels find youths to be easy prey

And your country is dangerous. Get over it. Spend your time and money in Japan, where everyone is polite to you would be my advice; why bother visiting a place that sucks?

No thanks. I prefer Australia.

And your country is dangerous. Get over it.

<watches as* CBEscapee** is eaten by the Australian wildlife>*

You find Australia to be polite? I guess it depends on who you are. In the US people can be be rude to Mexicans (Latinos in general, because many can’t appreciate tell the difference). But if you are Asian, Australia is a much more hostile place.

The reason is the same. “White” Australians think that uncontrolled Asian immigration is ruining their country. Though they seem to have had similar thoughts about people from Italy, Greece, former Yugoslavia, etc. as well, when the White Australia policy was in force and even after that. It seemed like the definition of white for many Australians was “British or Irish”. But the language used about Asians in Australia is at least as bad as you find on right wing radio in the US about Mexicans.

Actually New Orleans is down to 55 or 64 murders per 100,000 (depending on whose numbers you use). I don’t know where that other link got its information from.

I looked this stuff up, btw, because I was curious about whether the massive freaking hurricane that nearly wiped New Orleans off the map a few years ago had anything to do with the high homicide level, but actually it seems that crime rates have fallen since then. Go figure.

(I’m just ignoring Susanann’s “THESE COLORS DON’T RUN!!!” jingoism because, well. Hardly worth responding to, frankly.)

Hell with that. Australia scares the crap out of me. Everything has evolved until it’s obscenely dangerous. They have jellyfish that you can’t even see that will kill you. I’m still waiting for the kangaroos to evolve poison darts. Thanks, but I’ll skip on Australia.

I have one idea to stem the tide of of the drug problem:

When police surveillance sets up on a drug dealer, don’t go after the dealer; or at least leave the dealer for later.

Record the make/model/license plates of the buyers, and pick them up a few miles away from the dealer, so the surveillance isn’t busted. Or maybe just tail them all the way home, and bust them there with the drugs in their home.

When you have rounded up a dozen or so white, middle class assholes from the 'burbs with their weekly supply of toot, and confiscated their cars, homes, and seized their bank accounts, and publicly tried them with great fanfare, maybe the rest of white, middle- and upper-class America will begin to get the idea that a 12-pack of beer or a bottle or two of wine is a much better alternative than coke, crank, or weed (although I’d be down with legalizing weed).

So instead of arresting and imprisoning dirt poor minorities in inner-city blight zones, arrest wealthy, affluent white people who are the real driving force (in sheer numbers and economic buying power) behind America’s demand for drugs.

The downside:

Of course, I have great confidence in people’s ability to live in denial (“They’ll never catch me!”). As well as the white, upper-middle class to throw enough political weight around (and buy enough media coverage) to basically kill this program after the first arrest of some affluent, politically active/connected person’s drug addicted teenage kids.

I also believe that they’d tie up the court system with long, expensive, drawn-out trials, side-by-side with civil suits against police departments for “harrassing” them, when they could be arresting dealers.

And FTR, I’m a white, middle-class (but not drug-using) asshole from the 'burbs.
