Well ya got us there ameoba - you really aced us with your incisive rhetoric with that one.
Yep, Boo Boo Foo, amoeba really trumped us with THAT one, didn’t it? Concise, well written, witty, succinct - what more could we ASK for?
Hmmm…you know, amoeba’s replys in support of that idiot (moron? stupid? I’m running out of adjectives here…) nisobar kind of reminds me of a story, one that my grandpa used to tell me when I was just a wee one, sitting on his knee. Would you like to hear it??
"Once upon a time there were three Billy Goats called Gruff. In the winter they lived in a barn in the valley. When spring came they longed to travel up to the mountains to eat the lush sweet grass.
On their way to the mountains the three Billy Goats Gruff had to cross a rushing river. But there was only one bridge across it, made of wooden planks. And underneath the bridge there lived a terrible, ugly, one-eyed amoeba."
sorry for ignoring you boo, but hyperbole won’t cut the mustard either. now, I’m tired of being reeled in, if that was your intention. I stick with my guns- I’m not going to get upset over someone sticking their hand down their boxers. NOT, as you are keen to point out, jerking off in public, which has no relevance, nor any factual basis, to the OP. Neither will I get upset at sycophants, belittling, patronizing and cheap jabs, which, I add, could also be construed as ‘assholish’ behaviour.
After expressing approval and acknowledging Aries point, I was cut off, with faulty connotation nontheless. A grave error. One that simply highlights the real asshole in this thread: ‘what the fuck is wrong with some people?’ was that a rhetorical question? I applaud your genius PriceGuy, if it was your intention to be so self-effacing.
so, without resorting to hackneyed phrases, I will respectfully bow out and leave you to your finger pointing. you know best. don’t bother to post any more insults. you’re wasting your time. perhaps I am too.
Well, that was a pretty good Clueless Newbie Day, all things considered. Everyone happy?
Priceguy, we are now in an era of such astoundingly bad manners and near-complete ignorance that people actually get pissed off instead of contrite when you point up their misconduct. It’s basically some form of, “How dare you interfere with my complete and total self-absorption!”
I would find it utterly laughable, if it weren’t for the fact that these same morons (as you witnessed) frequently get rather violent about being irrefutably confronted with their own stupidity.
amoeba, you are exactly the sort of classless asshole this thread is about. Your completely inability to understand why rational people are offended by public misconduct is directly reflected in the infantile and tritely provocative postings you are making to this thread. I would pity you but I’ll reserve that instead for your (putative) parents. Having a mindless and feeble little twit like you for a child must be sheer and endless torture.
Bolding mine
Uh-oh! The misuse of sycophants…the pathetic attempts at wit…the insults…the “I’m leaving” shtick…could it be [sub]KingUekteNiftyCleverCobraMan?[/sub]
amoeba, how do you feel about the elderly?

I’ve noticed that every generation seems to have it’s fair share of assholes, I’m not quite sure that this one has a higher percentage than any other. I think it’ s more that teenage assholes are more visible due to having more time on their hands to be assholes. Once they get older the assholes in the population are too busy beating their wives, working on ad campaigns, working as IP attorneys or sending viagra spam to be as visible in public places as their teenaged counterparts.
Back in my youth* I was of the opinion that at least 50% of the guys in my highschool(and by extension my entire generation) were assholes, just like the two described in the OP. Annoying, rude punk ass kids that really could’ve used a good ass-whupping. Nowadays however I notice a lot less in the way of assholish behavior from guys in my age group, but still see plenty of it in the current crop of teenaged boys. I think a combination of growing out of assholism and simply being too busy being professional assholes is responsible for the perceived lower precentage of assholes in older generations vs younger ones. Though I am starting to suspect that society is becoming less and less effective at mellowing out assholes as they age.
IMO a lot of this downfall can be credited to the ongoing trend, especially here in 'merica, of not holding people accountable for their behavior. It’s not that the kids were just being inconsiderate pricks, they may have mental problems and need our help, or to give the kids a break they came from a broken home. Eventually we are a going to become so afraid of criticizing kids out of fear of damaging their self esteem, or being sued for discrimination because they’re special, that the checks and balances of society will no longer be able to mellow them out with age at all. So eventually the world will be peopled with huge, unruly tribes of sophmoric assholes. Then if we’re lucky another asteroid will find us and the reptiles can have another go at it .

Just because (way, way back, before the childish insults phase) amoeba advocates a choice, in avoiding conflict w/ ‘uncivilised’ types, this does not entail (from my newbish viewpoint), advocating public masturbation…
Nisobar didn’t advocate this behaviour either, but simply invoked his right to not be too wound up over what amounts to a relatively small matter, when considered alongside the horrific truths of say, rape, paedophilia and murder.
I don’t think for a minute that anyone here feels that any of these behaviours discussed to be publicly, or otherwise, acceptable - but I think that Nisobar and Amoeba need to guard their replies more from people who will jump them for an easy conversational point… in this respect, they justify the ‘newb’ tag
I know I’m really sticking my head above the parapet here, but the people that seem to be acting the biggest assholes are those who seem intent on demolishing what are resonable points…
but didn’t priceguy himself just shrug his shoulders, and act like it was okay?
in front of my chick? what a wuss, i’d have ripped the guys head off and beaten his friend to death w/ it
for the record, i agree with priceguy, but that dosn’t mean that i disagree with Nisobar or amoeba.
pulls head down from parapet, wipes brow, prepares for return fire
17? 15? Because surely someone of adult age would refuse to draw such a baseless, whack-job conclusion as
from the suspect behaviour of a solitary dickhead by the ocean.
Well, I’ll step in it and say: if I witnessed even one such scene, I’d feel the same way as the OP. And, for the record, I am of adult age.
As opposed to you, of course.
Hang it up.
That’s funny, coming from the guy who wrote this:
Yeah, I’m 15, but once upon a time I was young enough to remember older people slurring my generation because of the actions of a few. Not now, though. My vision is blurry, my back hurts, and young people today… don’t get me started. When they turn 7 they lose all respect for the elder generation.
Sarcasm aside, I’m 25. And I did (and do) hate it when people assumed I was an asshole because of my age. The problem is, see, that now I realize where those people were coming from. If you meet a random male teenager in the street, it’s better than even money that he’s going to act like an asshole. That’s where the “entire generation” part came from. I’m not saying you’re an asshole, Narrad. I’m just saying there are enough of them to make me seriously worry about the future.
Also, assholes have changed. I’m talking about Swedish conditions here, by the way. Ten years ago, there was still some semblance of rules. Some traces of honour. Some things you just didn’t do. If you got caught doing something wrong, you said “fuck, I got caught”. Today’s assholes, like Zenster observes, consider it a proper response to get pissed off, yell and threaten. I’m sure that behaviour has always existed, but it’s going mainstream. And that scares the living fuck out of me.
Blonde, you too may join Priceguy in the whack-job conclusions corner.
Say, here’s an anecdote. It stems from the early 90s.
A close friend of mine is a very attractive young woman. Let’s call her Sarah. Sarah studies in the city, so she has to catch the bus every morning and every evening. One fine summers evening, Sarah gets on her usual bus – the 17:20 173 – in her usual manner. There isn’t too many vacant seats on the bus, but she manages to score one sitting in front of an elderly man.
Sarah notices that the older man is dressed rather shabbily and that he doesn’t appear to be too clean. He makes some face at her as she sits down in front of him (her back to him), but she thinks nothing of it. Sarah later describes said face as a “disgusting leer”, but she doesn’t think much of it at the time.
30 minutes later and Sarah is feeling somewhat less than comfortable. She can feel the older man breathing on her – his breath is noisy and it smells bad – and hear him making small sounds.
Sarah then feels like something has lightly touched her on the back of her head. She’s not quite sure whether she imagined it or not, but she is definitely uncomfortable now. There are very few passengers left on the bus and they’re seated up front, so Sarah she leaves her seat and moves to sit near the driver.
The rest of her journey is uneventful.
Back home, Sarah’s father greets her at the door. He starts to follow her down the hall, but stiffens and stops in his tracks.
“Go take a shower”, he says quietly.
Confused by her dad’s tone of voice, Sarah walks to the bathroom. She looks at herself in the mirror, but sees nothing out of the ordinary. She turns to the side and notices…
… semen. Goopy, white semen in her hair and on the upturned collar of her coat.
That dirty, disgusting old man on the bus had jerked off into the back of Sarah’s seat. His filthy ejaculate had partly landed in her hair.
–
What should I have concluded when Sarah later told me this story? Should I have reacted as Priceguy did and concluded,
“An entire generation of old men are filthy, degenerate pigs. What can we do about them, this generation of disrespectful, misogynist animals? I’m am seriously worried for the future of this world!”
Or should I simply conclude:
- Some people, in all age groups, are disgusting pigs. The existence of my anecdote – and yours – does not enable one to draw wider conclusions; and
- There are disgusting pigs now; there were disgusting pigs in the early 90s; there were disgusting pigs in Victorian times.
You choose.

**Ahh, sweet ignorance. I could bet you, say, an all-expenses paid trip to the beach, that TEN YEARS ago people were saying exactly the same thing about you and yours. And ten years before that and the ten before that. It wasn’t true then and it’s not true now.
Narrad, try reading the thread before posting. It’s not just this incident. For the third time: it merely actualized the questions I’m asking. I’m not scared because this happened, I’m scared because it’s typical behaviour.
And I was there ten years ago. I was a bit of a prick, as were many of my peers. But we did understand that there were rules. Today’s assholes don’t.
My last remark: Priceguy is overreacting. I’m a bit older than he is, and no, things are not worse today than they were, say, in the 70’s, when Annie Hall could make light of cocaine abuse and Cheech and Chong made a career out of being potheads and violent crime was out of control in many cities in America.
Things generally are much better today, and if one guy has his hands in his pants when pg is on the beach, big fucking deal - that is not rape or murder or child abuse. That is one horny guy displaying at least a minimum of modesty in that his dick is not exposed.
If you are so offended about this one incident, the most it calls for is simply walking away.
And nisosbar once again demonstrates that he Just Doesn’t Get It. Read the thread, then think, then post.
I Get It. You Are Over Reacting.
Get Over It.
nisosbar, if you did get it, you wouldn’t have posted what you did. If you’d read the thread with a modicum of attention, you wouldn’t have posted what you did. It really is that simple.
OOOHHH…I get it now…So IF his dick isn’t exposed then I should just move on but if it is THEN I can be offended?
How else does this wisdom apply in life situations?
If I SEE a black eye on my neighbor and I heard her and hubby fighting last night but I didn’t actually SEE him hit her then I should go with “shit happens…move on”?
If I see a punk on the bus hassling an old lady but I don’t see him actually hurt her in any physical way then “shit happens…move on”?
The whole entire point of the OP was not about the guy on the beach…that was an EXAMPLE…the OP was about the ATTITUDE of people and what is wrong with it in present times.
Yes, there have been assholes in the past, they are in the present and there will be in the future. We get that. The OP questions was WHY are there and WHAT is wrong with these people.
Oh, and welcome nisobar. May you enjoy your time at the SDMB.
