Just realized I haven’t seen him in years, indeed since 1994’s Clifford, sure I see he’s back apparently with this year’s Fast Track in a minor role, but wth, he was kinda a lead more or less right up until the former, worked regularly, sparred famously with Letterman, then nothing for the next 12 years? Anyone know what happened to him? He retire? Whatup?
He had his own talk show on CNBC from '96 to '98.
And he was doing an Andy-Rooney-style commentary on 60 Minutes II for a while.
Ok, still if that’s it since the millenium, slim pickings, no?
Grodin was never a big star, was he? He appeared in a fairly random selection of roles in a fairly random selection of movies, did a few fairly random television shows, then kind of faded out. I never got the impression that he was close to catching fire or anything.
IMDB says that he’s been a correspondent for 60 Minutes II for the past six years. That’s not nothing.
He also has a reputation for being difficult to work with (which comes across even in his interviews). Studios will put up with that in a big star who can carry a vehicle but not in an “if he’s not available we can get John Ratzenberger or Ed O’Neill” level actor.
James Randi rants over Grodin (particularly his rudeness and “I know all!” attitude) on his website.
Hmmm, it seams to imply that, but I haven’t seen him or heard anyone mention him during that time frame, have you?
He was carrying on a slightly obsessive anti-Howard Stern kick a few years back, doing talk shows and sounding kind of goofy. I lost a bit of respect for him.
I think he was a pretty big star, The Heartbreak Kid and Midnight Run are pretty darned good movies to have in your resume.
I loved that movie…“Now here come two words for you: Shut the fuck up!”
Grodin was also excellent, IMO, in Catch 22.
