What the heck is going on with my monitor?

My monitor (a 19" flat panel dell) had a small spot of dead pixels in the upper right corner - about 4 inches from the side. That small spot grew to a long line. It started at the original spot, about 5 inches from the top and the line extended all the way to the top. The line was black. Then, about a week after it reached the top of my screen, it started turning orange. The orange started at the original splotch and slowly crept up. Once the whole line was orange, it started turning red. Again, it started at the splotch and crept up. For about a week, it stayed as a red line with a splotch at the bottom. Then, and this is the strange part, the line started disappearing. It started a few days ago, from the top and is now working it’s way down to the splotch. There is no blank spot where the line used to be. There is no pixel distruption at all. It gets smaller and smaller every day. It’s almost like my monitor is healing itself. But, now there is a larger red streak right on the far right side and a thin line on the far left side. They weren’t there before. They didn’t start out as black and turn to orange, then red. They just appeared one day as red streaks.

None of the streaks, splotches or lines bother me in any way. I’m not about to go buy another expensive monitor. But, it’s very odd. I’m wondering if this is the beginning of the eventual demise of my pretty monitor.

Do you have another monitor to try and be sure it is the display that is fault and not something in the video display board?

Never thought of that. I’ll try that tomorrow with my boyfriend’s monitor. Thanks for the suggestion.

19" LCDs aren’t expensive any more - they’re £100 or so in the U.K.

This is probably also something that would be covered by warrantee, if you’re still within that time frame. I can understand not wanting to buy a new one, but if you can get it replaced for free…
