What the heck was this commercial?

I know you guys can help me on this. Last night, for some reason, I flashed back on a commercial that I remember seeing many times when I was in elementary school (77-82).

In it, a man is being methodically suited up in leather by scientists wearing lab coats. Gloves, jacket, pants or chaps or something, and finally a helmet. Then, he’s picked up by a crane hook, lowered on to a motorcycle, and he drives off through a door.

What the heck was this commercial? A public service announcement? A leather goods store? An S&M motorcycle shop? I don’t remember any dialogue, voice over, or printed text, just the image of this guy preparing for a motorcycle ride like it was a deep sea expedition.

Someone’s got to remember this more clearly than I do.

Will work for sig line.

Was the guy wearing just one glove?

I really try to be good but it just isn’t in my nature!

I have no idea. Well, I know it wasn’t Michael Jackson if that helps.

Phouka…I don’t know what the commercial was, but it might help if you let us know what region of the country you are (were) in… It might be an ad for a local store!

I remember that one! Yes, I think it was a public service announcement. The guy wore tons of protective gear, including full crash helmet, leather jacket (I thought it was a joke at the time, not knowing that leather is actually very important protection against skids from laying your motorcycle down), football shoulder pads, and some special kind of footgear and maybe gloves.

I think the upshot was, you don’t need scientists to help you, you don’t need all that gear, and you don’t need a derrick to lower you on your bike. But you really should wear a helmet, since it’s relatively easy and your brains are pretty important.

I think there was a voiceover announcing eaching bit of protective gear in a deadpan voice.

See! I’m not insane! (Okay, at least, I’m not insane in that manner.)

Thank you, Boris.
