Throwing Muses put out an album last year, on which Donelly appeared (though not as a full-fledged member).
The greatest one (for me, anyway) is one I’d bet 99+% of you never heard from.
She goes by Mary Prankster and she’s the mid-atlantic cowpunk goddess. She’s what I miss most about moving to Ohio.
And what was the name of that girl band who had a sort of alt-hit with ‘Lady Killer’. I can’t remember.
I don’t know if I’d count Mazzy Star as a female artist. Hope Sandoval sings for them but I suspect the main creative force in the band is David Roback plus the rest of the band is pretty evenly split gender-wise. Laika and Portishead are also chiefly songwriting teams of a woman and a man… Guy Fixsen and Margaret Fiedler in Laika’s case and Geoff Barrow and Beth Gibbons in Portishead. Although based on Laika’s last album, a case could be made for Margaret Fiedler being the stronger creative force in Laika.
Of course creative work isn’t nearly that simple so personally I disavow the last paragraph entirely.
Lush did “Ladykillers.” They broke up about a year after their drummer committed suicide. Emma Anderson’s now in Sing Sing and Miki Berenyi started a family and isn’t doing music stuff.
It’s true about the dismal sales, lack of airplay and chart action. Same thing is true for Throwing Muses and always has been. But they have never lost the love and goodwill of their fan base… they’ve got some of the most devoted fans I can think of.
Man alive, Lush, that brings back memories. I had such a thing for Miki…
Another great female artist album from that time is of course “Transient Random Noise Burst With Announcements” by Stereolab. Songwriting is again man/woman, with Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier.
“Exile in Guyville” is the best of the bunch, though.
PJ Harvey, Portishead, Bjork, and Mazzy Star… oh yeah! I miss the early 90’s music scene. I also liked Whale but it’s more of a group thing.
Oy, y’all’re bringing me back to…what…ninth grade? Wow. Reminds me of the time last semester when one of the ninth graders I was observing came in wearing a Nirvana t-shirt; I chuckled to myself whilst feeling ancient.
Ninth grade.
Lord above, I was out of GRAD school by that time.
I feel old. Bring on the Sabbath, dude.
I met Whale in the audience at the Leeds festival in 99. I hugged the lead singer! she’s a cutie, and she’s about 4 foot 3 tall. I rule!

I wonder what happened to them? they had some kick ass tunes.
Die-hard Belly & Hersh fans need to get themselves to
