I know of the ELi as a company that publishes books and magazines in various languages, including Mickey Mouse and Popeye comics in Latin. I had always assumed they were a non-profit organization, because of its educational focus. But recently when the announcement came out who was pouring money into SuperPacs, I would not have made the connection if The Daily Show hadn’t done a collage of the logos of the various donors, and I recognized the ELi logo from my copy of Insuperabilis Snupius (the Unconquerable Snoopy).
What does this outfit need in the American political system that they’re willing to shell out a million zorkmids for? They are a publisher, but there are bigger publishing houses in America. Think Progress has them listed as in the ‘cosmetics’ sector. Huh?
From my point of view, ELi is an institution that writes articles about Justin Bieber in Latin, to bring in the young crowd. And they do some other languages. What are they up to buying elections in the U.S.?
