I’m fairly young (mid 30s), female, still in her fertile years. I don’t think I’m heading toward menopause yet. (If this week is any indication )
So, why do I have a single black hair growing on my face above the right corner of my upper lip? This damn thing keeps coming back…I pluck it, root and all (take that, black bristle!) and in a few months it’s back!
I have the normal, faint down on my face that every woman has…probably less than most. So this thing is pretty noticeable. It’s long and definitely black.
I’ve started to check that area on my face every week or so, just to make sure it hasn’t grown back. But WHERE is it coming from??? Am I starting to grow a moustache? If so, why is it coming in one hair at a time?
I have horrible memories of my grandmother making my sister and me pluck the hairs from her chin with tweezers…I still get shivers when I think of that. What is going on???
Ivylass, you are not alone. On my neck I will occasionally get these single lonely black hairs that look like they belong in my eyebrows. I usually pluck them, root and all, but so’ nuff, they’re back a few weeks later.
The thigh hairs I speak of are not pubic hair, not at all. They’re dead straight, dark brown, between 1.5-2.5 inches long. There are about 10 of them, growing on the back of my thighs, starting only just above the knee. They’re far more like really really long Crazy Nipple Hairs of Doom than pubic hairs.
I don’t shave my thighs, only the below knee section. See, the rest of the thigh hair is so downy soft and practically invisible. I pluck 'em out when I can be bothered to (or if I feel the need to be seductive), as with the Mad Crazy Nipple Hairs of Doom.
Mind you, what with my several bellies, I’m glad I have a partner who seems not to mind my flawed nakedness, mad crazy hairs and all.
This sounds a little like what I call Mutant Hairs. I’m close to your age Ivy, and I’ve had a Mutant Hair maybe once every 3 years out of the past 10. Instead of being black though, these are hairs that are exactly like the downy hairs you mentioned, but they somehow have grown out of all proportion OVERNIGHT!
The first time I discovered one, I thought to myself “Jeez ya chucklehead, how did you miss that 4” hair growing out of your upper-lip so for so long? Why did you not notice it, when say, it had reached oh… 2 inches?" When the next one appeared on my cheek, I knew there was no way I had missed a 5" hair, while putting on make-up for work the previous day.
I’ve since discovered that some of my friends have experienced the same thing, though their Mutant Hairs grow out of less conspicuous places, like on their back, or on their stomachs. Once the offending hair is plucked, it doesn’t grow back (at least not in the same place), but I have no idea what causes them.
I read your post about getting the laser hair removal. I think I may be repeating myself and so I apologize if that is the case. Some folks get really nasty burns because in many states, laser hair removal is not regulated and so the qualifications of some people doing this is up in the air. I am sure you’ve considered this and will be sure to go to a well qualified individual. Just wanted to toss in the warning. (Man, I hope that didn’t sound preachy.)
I’ll agree the black hairs are upsetting but you’re entering a whole new world when the hairs are long, curly and white. I usually find them on my neck when the hair is about 2" long. I’m wondering if my co-workers take bets on how long it’ll take me to notice that hair is sticking out.
I have a lot of hair on my arms (I’m Italian-American, so whatumIgonnado), but it’s thin and fine. Except for these two coarse black hairs on my left arm, just above where I wear a watch, that stand up like a cowlick while all the others lie close to the skin! (They spring out of the same pore or whatever you call it, which is also raised.
I’ve had them since childhood. There’s nothing I can do but pluck them, but they always grow back.
I get 'em around my chin. I think I know the problem that ** cichlidiot** describes, though - the start to grow, and they’re colorless. Then, suddenly, one day, they suddenly turn black. I’ve caught them in mid-transition. Bastards.
I have these black hairs that occasionally grow out of my chin. I’m thinking it might be a genetic thing, since my mom has them as well. In fact, I just plucked one out yesterday… always wondered just what was up with that particular phenomenon.
Once my dad and I were in a hotel room, and he was combing his hair. Suddenly he said, “Hey! Look at this!” He’d found a hair, growing out of the top of his head with all the others, that was at least a foot and a half long. It was the same color and texture as his regular head-hair. His regular hair was short and conservative, and here was this one Godzilla hair.
Two possibilities:
One, every time he’d had a haircut for the last five or ten years, the barber had somehow managed to miss that particular hair;
Two (more likely), that follicle got some kind of random megadose of follicle growth hormone or something.
I once found an eight inch long leg hair on my shin. I’m a fairly hairy guy, but most of the leg hair is at most an inch long, it’s just packed in densly. But one day I was wearing shorts I looked down and saw what I assumed was a stray head hair laying on my leg, when it woudln’t brush off I investigated, and found that it was still connected. It was really disgusting, but being a morbid curiousity kind of person I just let it go to see how long it would get, But one day the next month it was gone, I guess it finally died, or got ripped out or something.
