What the...? Spontaneous Corruption, or what just happened to my Word document?

I’m a writer for a living. And, most unhappily, I use Word.

So today I’m answering some e-mail in one window (we use Netscape 7.1), while another window is open to my Word 2000 document. The document is in very simple text, with one equally simple, four-column-by-three-row chart. Suddenly, a warning appears that the chart has become corrupted. Before I even get a chance to read the rest of the warning, half of the text of the ten-page document just kinda disappears, and rather at random. Trying to prevent further damage, I close the document.

And, of course, the settings for my work computer didn’t include automatic backup (why, oh why, doesn’t Microsoft turn that on by default?) and Autorecover seems rather like insurance: when you actually need it, it’s worthless. So now I’m basically completely rewriting this document.

What on earth happened? What might’ve happened to my (very simple) chart? What could I have done wrong? Any thoughts?

Band name!

Honestly, I have no idea. I would figure out some kind of backup system, and also save frequently.

Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Perhaps your RAM is flaky. Do you get frequent BSOD’s as well?
